Walk to Cure Diabetes 2005

Walk to Cure Diabetes 2005

On Sunday 18th September, over 1000 people took part in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund) sponsored 'Walk to Cure Diabetes' at the Manor Farm Country Park at Hedge End, near Southampton.

For the second year in a row, Matchtech Group Plc was represented by 3 teams, who walked the 4.5 mile course alongside employees and friends from BAA Southampton Airport, the Ford Motor Company, B&Q, ITV Meridian, CLC Group and the Southampton Daily Echo. Once again, TV's Fred Dinenage took part in the warm-up and started the walk.

One of Matchtech’s teams made the headlines when they appeared in full fancy dress as ‘Superheroes’. George Winfield’s ‘Spiderman’, Becky Cooper’s ‘Pocahontas’, Katherine Badley’s ‘She-ra’, Simon Lees’ ‘King Kong’, Charlotte Gunton’s ‘Daphne’, Katie Horrocks’ ‘Wonder Woman’ and Josie Dean’s ‘Super Girl’ added extra fun to an excellent day out which was superbly organised by JDRF.

JDRF is the leading non-profit, non-governmental charity which funds type 1 diabetes research worldwide. The money raised in this sponsored walk will enable JDRF to fund research to find a cure for diabetes. A cure is within reach; it is only a matter of time and money.

  • Diabetes is a serious metabolic disorder that affects approximately 1.8 million people in the UK.
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of adult blindness, limb amputations, kidney disease, and is one of the leading causes of heart attacks and strokes.
  • Recent study shows that the incidence of diabetes in the under-5s has doubled over the past ten years.
JDRF again hopes to raise £100,000 from this sponsored walk. Matchtech is pleased to have had so many representatives involved in the project and we look forward to continuing to support JDRF in the future. Thanks must go to our 3 team captains, Gill Cox, Pam Beecroft and Josie Dean who put in a lot of hard work to make this a successful event for Matchtech to contribute to.
