Searching For Jobs

Tips on how to search efficiently and get the most from the advanced search features.

Searching Tips

Note: Results are always ordered by the date posted, newest first.

  • When searching for jobs, try to pick out the most important keywords you are looking for in the job description. If too many results are being returned, try to be more specific. E.g. 'mechanical design' instead of 'design'.
  • The wildcard character * (asterisk) means "match any word beginning ..." E.g searching for 'manag*' returns anything beginning 'manag' and would include 'manager', 'managing', 'management', 'managerial' and others.
  • You can use the logical operators 'And', 'Or' and 'Not' to include or exclude specific words from your search.
    • And is the default operator - 'mechanical and design' and 'mechanical design' are equivalent and will return any job with BOTH words in the specification.
    • 'Or' will include jobs with the following word in the results. E.g 'design or engineer' will return all jobs containing EITHER word in the specification.
    • Not will exclude the following word. E.g. 'mechanical design not engineer' will return all jobs containing 'mechanical' AND 'design' but EXCLUDE those containing the word 'engineer'.
  • By default the Contract or permanent option is set to Either. You may change it to show you only contract or permanent positions.
  • You can search within a specific Industry Sector to be shown jobs matching your keywords in an industry related to you. Similarly, you can broaden your search by choosing the '-- All Sectors --' option.

Advanced Searching

An Advanced Job Search has all the following additional features.

  • Age limit of vacancies displayed allows you to filter out vacancies returned that were older than the time you specify.
  • Minimum pay allows you to filter out any vacancies that do not meet your basic pay criteria. You can specify an hourly rate or salary, depending on the value selected in the Contract or permanent option.
  • Max. distance from UK city/postcode allows you to enter a UK postcode or town as a starting point for a search radius. The search will only return jobs within the distance you choose from that location.
