The Job
Purpose of the Role:
Reporting to the Function Group Manager through the Principal Engineer for Engine and engine systems, and working alongside other engine and Powertrain design and project engineers, to be responsible for defined aspects of base engine design on a new vehicle platform.
Principal Accountabilities:
• To lead the detailed design & engineering of base engine and engine systems components and assemblies from concept to production.
• The above to include new engine concept layouts, new engine technology design studies and vehicle integration & package schemes leading to detailed designs for prototype and production release and manufacture.
• Understands and defines the package constraints for the components. Working with suppliers to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets and within DFM requirements.
• Works with other team members to develop component and system specifications.
• Works with the other designers, the design director and the component supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
• Ensures the components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces, cooling systems, air path and control systems.
• Chair cross functional design reviews
• Establish and control design release in line with ETRS requirements
• Support and evaluate results of component testing
• Support powertrain & vehicle development activities
• Support vehicle manufacturing, launch & planning
• Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
• BOM definition and management.
Knowledge, skills and experience:
• Significant experience of base engine design and packaging
• Excellent CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with strong GD&T application experience.
• A high level of technical knowledge & experience of Powertrain component & system design, test & production.
• PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
• Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery
• Component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP
Qualifications and Training:
Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
