Job description

Purpose of Role

To oversee core teams and service group and be accountable for delivery of high-quality Projects. Hold responsibility for the quality and development of resources and quality of service delivery within a broad geographic area, but with a wider remit to deliver cross-regional services working with other Directors and Service Leads.

To establish, develop and deliver successful business plans and strategies within identified markets. To ensure that the aspirations and expectations of stakeholders are met, including our customers, internal clients, staff and shareholders.

To provide leadership, governance and direction to senior service managers and teams, with responsibility and accountability for ensuring quality products, consistent performance, best practice and technical excellence.

Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key clients, adopting a collaborative partnership approach and negotiating at senior level with internal and external business partners, clients and customers. Review and approve proposals and major fee bids to maximise chances of winning new work whilst ensuring that risks are minimised, and profitability targets are met.

Responsible for winning new work that will enable the professional service functions and wider business to meet growth aspirations. Act as Account Manager for several key clients and frameworks and work closely with the Director of Operations to assist in the management of accounts and delivery of efficient regional financial performance.

Recruit and develop skilled resources to deliver technical services, meet customer expectations and business growth plans. Ensure that staff are provided with the appropriate information technology, mentoring and training needed to maintain high-quality service delivery.

Provide line management to technical and professional staff, agreeing and measuring performance targets and ensuring cross-service working.

Work with the Director of Operations to develop a fit for purpose business strategy and organisational structure that is flexible, adaptable and aligned with planned growth aspirations. work closely with senior managers in the Engineering Service to develop and maintain collaborative working practices.

Report and contribute to senior management meetings as required, assisting in general business management and implementing agreed management strategies. Add value in the management, direction, delivery, and quality checking of project work; lead effectively and inspire innovation and growth in others. To lead cross-service business management and operations functions within a defined region and office bases.

Accountable for business performance within a defined region, including profit and loss, debt management, utilisation and business growth plan delivery.

Work alongside Regional and Technical Directors, providing leadership, governance and direction to senior service managers and teams.

Carryout 121's, appraisals, team meetings with all direct reports and ensure they are carried out throughout their region. Ensuring performance is met and action taken where appropriate.

Responsible for all recruitment within their region ensuring alignment with Regional and Corporate Business Plans.

Responsible for the office(s) in their region, ensuring H&S requirements are met.

Develop and implement a fit for purpose structure that is flexible and adaptable to planned growth aspirations. Act as line manager to a senior management group, agreeing and measuring performance targets.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or equivalent;
  • Chartered Status with a recognised professional Institution (ICE, CIHT or equivalent)
  • 15 years' experience delivering relevant technical services within the Built Environment;
  • Knowledge and experience operating within a matrix model;
  • Demonstrable experience developing and leading opportunity pursuits, business development and account management and experience developing lasting Client relationships;
  • Knowledge and experience of effective people leadership initiatives including Equality, Inclusion and Diversification
  • Demonstrable experience of programme and project management including experience of value and change management;
  • Knowledge and experience of financial management for significant project and programme values
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant industry wide technical design standards, legislation, codes, specifications and contracts including NEC
  • Knowledge and experience managing large teams and significant budgets at senior level
