Job description

Our client, a leading company in the rail industry, is seeking a highly skilled Rail Health and Safety Manager to join their team. With their extensive experience in rail infrastructure, our client covers all aspects of the railway system, ensuring safety and adherence to industry standards and processes.

As the Rail Health and Safety Manager, you will play a pivotal role in providing subject matter advice, assurance, direction, and support to the Rail Team. Your main focus will be on continuous improvement, taking the lead in all areas of safety, health, and environment (SHE). Additionally, you will support the planning and delivery of projects across the Rail Sector.

Responsibilities for the Role

  • Support and promote the communication and explanation of the safety strategy in order that all staff and contract workforce are fully aware of all safety expectations. To raise safety concerns and to agree actions to upskill workforce. Effectively lead on promoting the Safety Strategy to the wider workforce including to contracted staff ensuring understanding of Safety expectations.
  • Champion a culture of 'improvement' by raising Safety concerns and to agree actions to upskill the workforce.
  • Take ownership of developing a programme of site visits, ensuring all sites are visited and audited (prioritise by size of project, volume of workers on site, projects involving significant risk etc), including sister offices in Cwmbran (Wales) and Doncaster.
  • Carry out inspections and deliver safety awareness briefings, standdowns and training.
  • Support the Bid department by providing H&S data and knowledge when tendering for Projects.
  • Provide professional support and knowledge of the discipline to the BID team in compiling HSQE responses in winning work.
  • Deputise for the Group HSQE Manager during client and stakeholder meetings where needed.
  • Support the Group HSQE Manager with the implementation of H&S measures.
  • Act as deputy to the Group Head of HSQE in representing the company at External, Client and Stakeholder meetings.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with clients, Principal Contractors and Industry businesses to understand safety strategies.
  • Proactively managing continuous improvement strategies to strengthen understanding of how we can be better.
  • Provide a single point of contact for the client to feedback on safety and competency matters
  • Take ownership of developing a programme of site visits, ensuring all sites are visited/audited, (prioritise by size of project, volume of workers on site, projects involving significant risk etc).
  • Thoroughly investigate accidents and incidents to include immediate, underlying and root causes accompanied by an appropriate remedial action plan. Document the process with reports, statements and evidence. Attendance on site where appropriate to conduct investigations and produce reports
  • Work with the Group Head of HSQE to co-present monthly HSQE forums and Workshops.
  • Be an ambassador for the business in raising customer perception and providing timely and quality support to health and safety issues and activities.
  • Quick resolution of any safety issues/concerns on site where possible
  • Provide feedback to all stakeholders on lessons learnt from incidents and accidents
  • Work closely with the Group Head of HSQE in developing the Company's policies, processes and procedures
  • Check that the client has safe systems and working practices and highlight any concerns to the Group Head of HSQE.
  • To proactively work with the Fleet Manager to ensure a high standard of driving is maintained through awareness and training
  • To develop and maintain constructive and effective communication channels to ensure information and feedback is continuous.

About You:

Essential skills and qualifications:

  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) qualified.
  • Relevant experience in successfully managing safety, health, quality, and environmental governance in the rail industry.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the UK and European legislative framework
  • Demonstrable Network Rail project management experience
  • Organized and reliable individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Full clean UK driving license

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Membership of NEBOSH
  • Proven knowledge of investigation and shared learning processes
  • Project management experience
  • Strong management, interpersonal, influencing, and organizational skills
