200 highly skilled jobs to be created by electric vehicles firm Sevcon
Sevcon, an innovative North East England engineering firm is set to create 200 highly skilled jobs as it triples in size with a move to a new home.
Sevcon creates parts for low carbon vehicles and is benefiting from the global move to increase the use of electric cars, which has seen it increase headcount over the last three years and build up a £320m order book.
Sevcon’s move to new, larger premises in Gateshead will triple the company’s size overnight. Amongst the new positions, the company is looking for electronics, software, systems validation, mechanical and safety specialists to join the team. They are interested in professionals with experience of Research or Development on automotive systems or similar complex systems, and skills in Motor Control, Model Based Design, Automotive Standards/Tools (26262, Autosar, ASpice), Software Engineering and Power Electronics.
New employees will be working for a company which has been at the forefront of electric vehicle technology for the last 50 years and has developed to become a world leading provider of innovative electrification products, services and solutions to the global market. Two of the company’s projects, worth over £56m, are with a British supercar company and were announced last year, while a second is with a South East Asian tier one supplier, and could be worth up to £40m.
Sevcon president and chief executive Matt Boyle explained: "The worldwide electrification movement is prompting our ambitious growth agenda and our product roadmap has the potential to put us in the sweet spot for this transition."
"The switch from the internal combustion engine to hybrid and electric vehicles is happening now. All the major motor manufacturers are involved and Sevcon’s skills are proving vital to this global shift."
This announcement will provide more opportunities for the region and for those individuals interested in joining a company at the forefront of innovation and technology.
Matt Boyle continued: “These are exciting times for the company and we will need some 200 additional members of staff to support our growth. The future has never been brighter for Sevcon.”
Matchtech’s Engineering Technology Divisional Manager Tim Carling summarises:
"It’s great news for Sevcon and the North East. It’s exciting times in the automotive sector and for any software, systems or hardware engineer looking to be at the forefront of the HEV movement, Sevcon would be a great place to develop or accelerate a career."
