Job description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Project Engineer to support the design, development, and implementation of advanced cryogenic systems in cutting-edge energy applications. This role is pivotal in advancing clean energy technologies through the development of robust, high-efficiency cryogenic infrastructure for storage, transport, and utilization of gases such as liquid hydrogen, helium, or natural gas.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists working on national energy priorities including hydrogen economy, fusion power, and superconducting systems. This is a hands-on engineering role involving system design, thermal-fluid modeling, vendor coordination, and project management from concept through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design and engineering of cryogenic systems, including heat exchangers, vacuum-insulated piping, pressure vessels, and cryostats.
- Develop detailed engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications in compliance with ASME, NFPA, and applicable codes.
- Perform thermal and fluid dynamic modeling for low-temperature systems using tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, or EES.
- Manage end-to-end project execution including scoping, scheduling, budgeting, procurement, fabrication oversight, installation, and system commissioning.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, controls, and systems engineers to integrate cryogenic components into larger energy systems.
- Interface with national laboratories, government stakeholders (e.g., DOE), and industry partners to align technical development with strategic goals.
- Prepare technical reports, participate in design reviews, and contribute to R&D proposals and publications.
Required Qualifications
- S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5-10 years of experience in mechanical or cryogenic systems engineering, preferably in energy, aerospace, or research sectors.
- Experience with hydrogen or liquefied natural gas (LNG) systems.
- Strong understanding of cryogenics, vacuum technology, and thermodynamics.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and engineering analysis tools.
- Familiarity with pressure vessel codes (e.g., ASME BPVC) and cryogenic safety standards.
- Demonstrated project management experience in multidisciplinary technical environments.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- S. citizenship or permanent residency required due to government contract requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in working with DOE, national labs, or utility-scale energy projects.
- Knowledge of material behavior at cryogenic temperatures.
- PE license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
