Our client are a cutting edge defence business with an exciting role for a power electronics engineer to join them working on earth observation satellite systems.

Strong Power Electronics engineering experience combined with digital and analog hardware design skills.

The Job

In this role you will act as the project technical authority during the life cycle of an Earth Observation Satellite Payload project. You will have technical responsibility for producing the electrical systems logical and physical architecture and ensuring its early phase studies through design, integration and validation phases.

This work will involve derivation of requirements at each level of the product tree, generation of high-level specifications and the development / maintenance of performance models to ensure the reliability and integrity of electrical signals transmission / power distribution, taking into account bonding shielding throughout the spacecraft and EMC.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Define robust electrical systems architectures for spacecraft payloads including DC power, telemetry and command and control interfaces

  • Work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team through all phases of a project lifecycle, to establish and develop a system/product/service

  • Capture customer needs, define technical requirements, and turn them into a feasible solution by proposing a reliable and cost-effective electrical systems architecture appropriate to the space environment

  • Manage technical relationships with customers

  • Ensure accuracy and consistency of engineering requirements and designs, with adequate performance margins

  • To clearly represent and explain the electrical systems architecture to other stakeholders and to maintain an accurate database of documents, drawings and tables depicting all electrical interfaces

  • Manage engineering work packages including work placed on contractors or suppliers and ensure timely completion of tasks within cost and schedule.

  • Manage technical relationships with suppliers to agree technical requirements and ensure adequate expertise applied to product development and performance

  • Support demonstration of the system performance through preparation and completion of verification and tests

  • Prepare and present oral and written information in clear and concise form for project and internal reviews, and for customer progress meetings

  • Anticipate and manage trade-offs between solutions considering all aspects: quality, cost, schedule, risks, safety and performance.

This role will require occasional national and/or international travel to visit customers and subcontractors for, e.g. technical reviews and progress meetings.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in the design and development of analog, digital and dc power interfaces and distribution systems

  • Thorough knowledge of standard interfaces and protocols for different types and speeds of digital signals, and their appropriate applications

  • Solid understanding of transmission lines and communications theory

  • Experienced in use of industry standard modelling tools (e.g. P-Spice, Matlab) for signals analysis

  • Understanding of bonding, grounding, shielding and the management of EMC
