The Job

Job Description

As a Principal Engineer -Explosion Safety, you will have the opportunity to ensure design safety and DSEAR compliance across multiple submarine programmes and manufacturing facilities. The scope of the role includes potential to support submarine programmes at various stages of the lifecycle, from concept design stage through submarine build and commissioning activities, as well as activities supporting operational vessels in the Royal Navy. The role is currently offered with remote working due to the ongoing pandemic, with occasional requirements for site visits to support specific packages of work (Barrow in Furness).

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Explosion Safety will involve:

Taking an active role in explosion safety and DSEAR compliance activities across a variety of submarine programmes and facilities supporting the manufacture of submarines

Contributing to the design of submarines in concept stages, and design modifications of mature and operational submarines from an explosion safety perspective

Undertake DSEAR assessments of buildings and facilities associated with manufacturing

Acting as a subject matter expert for explosion safety and DSEAR compliance at various design review meetings and as a design peer reviewer

Undertaking Hazardous Area Classification activities

Producing and peer reviewing DSEAR risk assessment documents

Developing, producing and maintaining explosion safety processes and risk management strategies

Monitoring, recording and reporting against key performance indicators for explosion safety through a variety of key stakeholder groups

Reviewing and supporting submarine commissioning strategies for explosion safety

Providing ad-hoc support to regulatory inspections


DSEAR risk assessment experience gained from a high hazard industry

Understanding of hazardous area classification

Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders


Degree qualified in STEM discipline

Safety case development experience

Knowledge or experience working in the naval maritime industry would be advantageous but not essential.

You must also have the ability to think strategically, problem-solve and consider the "bigger picture" within your day-to-day role. You must be energetic and bring enthusiasm to the evaluation and control of fire and explosion hazards and use initiative and bring new ideas.
