The Job

Our client, a Defence contractor and information services provider, is requiring a Programme Manager to join them on an initial 6 month contract.

Role is working inside IR35, paying around £450 per day umbrella. Remote work available with some travel to Farnborough as required.


Directs all phases of programs from inception through completion. Drives program execution in order to achieve key business and financial objectives for orders, revenue recognition, operating income, and free cash flow for new, continuing, or current programs. Responsible for the cost, schedule and technical performance of company programs or subsystems of major programs. Participates in the negotiation of contract and contract changes. Coordinates the preparation of proposals, business plans, performance Statement of Work (SOW) and specifications, operating budgets and financial terms/conditions of contract. Acts as primary customer contact for program activities, leading program review sessions with customer to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance. Establishes design concepts, criteria and engineering efforts for product research, development, integration and test. Expands the product line with the customer. Establishes milestones and monitors adherence to master plans and schedules, identifies program problems and obtains solutions, such as allocating resources or changing contractual specifications. Directs the work of employees assigned to the program from technical, manufacturing and administrative areas.


  • Overall responsibility for completing the project within time and budget, and meeting all customer requirements
  • Managing any bid or proposal activity, and production of the business case
  • Developing a project plan, schedule and project deliverables/scope of supply
  • Ensuring responsibility for producing deliverables is clearly understood
  • Managing the project budgets and monitoring/controlling all costs to stay within the assigned Project Baseline Budget
  • Agreeing project completion/acceptance criteria with the customer
  • Managing update and completion of all project documentation, both customer-deliverables and internal plans, reports and risk register
  • Managing resources allocated to the project
  • Identifying and managing dependencies on the project
  • Managing and communicating with users, customers and stakeholders
  • Managing any third parties associated with the project, including sub-contractors, suppliers and contract staff
  • Managing risks and resolving any issues to ensure the project's successful outcome
  • Undertaking business development activity to generate follow-on work from existing customers


  • Proven effective leadership skills and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to communicate at all levels
  • Strong people management skills
  • Proven ability to influence, negotiate and provide guidance and support to motivate individuals and the team
  • Ability to create & maintain well-structured schedules to enable effective and efficient earned value management and programme delivery to required timescales
  • Project risk management techniques
  • Use of Project Management tools, such as MS Project
  • Project financial management including costs, inventory and cash flow
  • Competence with "Office" applications and ability to use IT as a general tool
  • Management of ITAR and EAR in defence programmes



  • University degree (or equivalent) in either Engineering, Defence related subject or other equivalent degree
  • Formal qualifications in Project management (Prince 2, APM, PMI)


  • MBA or Masters Degree in Defence related subject or Management/Business.
  • Formal qualification in negotiation, risk management and control, financials or accounting

Suitable candidate must be a sole British National and eligible for SC Clearance.
