Our client, one of the UK's leading suppliers of products to the Automotive industry, are currently looking for experienced Powertrain Design Engineers to join them on long-term contract based in the UK.


Mechanical Design - Powertrain/Base Engine

The Job


Responsible for the design of a wide range of complex mechanical components for the base engine sector. The Senior Design Engineer will work closely with the Chief Designer to take ownership of a particular mechanical design system as identified by the Chief Designer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The mechanical design of components through concept, definitive and detail design phases
  • Carries out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, 2D layouts, 2D detailing, Tolerance stacks as required.
  • Responsible for the following engineering activities:
    • System and component specifications and that your design meets the requirements
    • Creation of 3D models and 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase
    • Creation of assembly drawings and bill of materials
    • Carry out design change requests as per process and in a timely manner
    • Fit and function of their responsible parts or system and their interaction with other systems
    • Creation of component or system design plans
    • Meeting design timing plans on assigned tasks
  • Work closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly
  • Responsible for reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the project management team, chief engineer or chief designer
  • Creation of technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects
  • Highlights all mechanical technical risks to the chief designer
  • Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews
  • If required, generates minutes from design reviews
  • Liaise with suppliers and other Ricardo departments to ensure the required information is available when needed and customer requests are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Liaise directly with the customer as required
  • Follows departmental processes relating to management of designs (MDP)
  • Ensures design files and documentation are kept up to date, and stored in accordance with department procedures


  • Proven experience working as a Design Engineer
  • Broad range of mechanical design knowledge with experience in base engines is preferred, if not automotive powertrain
  • 2D & 3D PTC CREO CAD skills
  • Competent user of Windchill PLM System preferred but not essential
  • Familiarity of technical specifications
  • Ability to understand and produce technical drawings to high standard with GD&T competency
  • Able to produce designs to specified deadlines and achieves required timescales
  • Sets an example to other design engineers in the team on best practice performance
  • Confident proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations
  • Good communication skills, dealing with other employees, external clients & suppliers

Working Arrangement

This role can be fully remote from home or onsite at either Leamington Spa or Shoreham-by-Sea (or a hybrid approach). Preferred working practices, as well as pay rate, to be discussed on application.
