Roles and responsibilities

Engineering Responsibilities

  • Deliver innovative, sustainable, efficient, safe, practical and intelligent structural engineering solutions on all bridge projects and other activities appropriate to the stage and type of project.
  • Prepare detailed design documents including Forms A,B &C for Network Rail schemes
  • Prepare detailed design calculations to Eurocode and British Standards for repairs and new build schemes
  • Prepare assessment reports and calculations to BD21/01 and NR/GN/CIV/025 standards for bridge assessments
  • Participate and lead inspection / examination works for assessments and repair scoping surveys
  • Prepare Work Package Plans / SH&E plans in preparation for site works when required
  • Support the Engineering Manager and Managing Director in the delivery and commercial control of projects including client reporting, programming, resource planning, commercial monitoring ​ and client presentations.
  • Undertake calculation checking for works within areas of experience
  • Support junior engineers and technicians in the preparation of documents (calculations, drawings, specifications and other documents)

Marketing

  • Maintain excellent professional and friendly working relationships with colleagues, existing clients and other collaborators to secure flow or repeat work.
  • Actively and positively promote the company in all work activities. Attend suitable industry events to develop connections with new clients and to help secure new, interesting and profitable work.
  • Assist with editing and creating all marketing collateral (brochures, presentations, website, blogs, social media) under the direction of the Engineering Manager.

Communication

  • Liaise with clients and the design team to ensure that efficient and integrated structural solutions are produced on all projects which are sensitive to the design intent.
  • Maintain good, clear and proactive communication with all relevant members of the design team to ensure all are aware of project progress.
  • Attend design team, site and client meetings as required and keep accurate notes of all discussions.

Training

  • Share expert knowledge across the team to help develop others.
  • Actively and continually update skills and technical knowledge through CPD.
  • Ensure that all professional CPD requirements are met every year.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The following are essential for successful performance in the role:

  • Degree level qualification in Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering and ideally educated to MSc / MEng level or equivalent
  • 8+ years experience in relevant field with associated experience.
  • Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE or working towards
  • Extensive experience with bridge inspection, assessments and design schemes
  • Strong experience in delivering bridge design through Network Rail and preferably Highways England standards
  • Proven project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget
  • Extensive experience in rail projects in the UK (highways experience would be useful)
  • Previous exposure to clients including: Network Rail, Tier One/Principal Contractors (national and local authorities would be an advantage)
  • Proven ability to manage employees
  • Experience of managing Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation
  • Strong ability in various software packages including LUSAS and MIDAS, with strong experience in Finite Element Analysis
  • Strong knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • An adaptable and flexible working style with the ability to develop and foster collaborative working relationships
  • The ability to confidently present ideas, opinions and solutions
  • Ability to represent the company on site visits/surveys (sometimes in unsociable hours) in a professional manner
  • Previous experience as a CRE is preferable

You will need to have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites and carry out inspections in possession from time-to-time.
