The Job


Job Definition:

The following statement is drawn from the UK-SPEC UK STANDARD FOR
Council. Where reference is made to 'Incorporated Engineer' or 'Engineer (I) it should be read as
covering an equivalent professional registration and qualification in a relevant technical discipline.

Incorporated Engineers maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology,
and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.

Incorporated Engineers are able to demonstrate:

- The theoretical knowledge to solve problems in developed technologies using well proven
analytical techniques
-Successful application of their knowledge to deliver engineering projects or services using
established technologies and methods
-Developing effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters
-Commitment to professional engineering values

Designer; applies understanding of design processes, tools, systems and techniques and applies
these to a limited range of design or detail for assemblies, components or systems. Designs and
develops solutions to common or well-articulated design situations, problems and issues.

Works under some technical supervision

Applies knowledge and experience of engineering design principles and practices to the
design and detail or generation of product standards for engineering plant and systems. Specialists
in techniques, processes and tools for large scale detailed design of platforms, assemblies, systems
and equipment installation.

Typically on an IEng career path and working to attain HNC/HND

Functional Knowledge -

Basic understanding of design techniques, processes and approaches in a
range of industrial situations. Basic knowledge in use of design tools and techniques, methods,
company design standards and systems

Business Expertise -

Must understand how to carry out own job and how this fits into the work of the
immediate design team. Understands how the activities of this team integrate into others teams
whose activity is related

Leadership -

The role has no responsibility for the supervision, training or coaching others
Problem Solving - Gaining understanding of business approaches, techniques and tools, learning how
to apply analytics to problems and issues, learning to apply judgement to the selection of
appropriate solution.

Nature of Impact -

Provides quality and reliable information to assists others in making decisions.
The role is closely related to work of others and therefore will affect their team
Area of Impact - Impact of job limited to team and quality of execution will reflect on the team.

Interpersonal Skills -

Requires good communication skills involving the exchange of technical
information with others, typically engineers. There is an accepted way of dealing with,
communicating and relating to others; requires tact and politeness.

Global Grade - The majority of the following credentials will apply:
- Design and develop solutions to a limited range of common design situations/problems
- Typically works as part of a team and under limited technical supervision
- Requires knowledge and experience in the use and application of design techniques
- Understand and apply a range of fundamental design processes, tools, systems and
- Gaining and expanding knowledge and experience.

The following key responsibilities are consistent with those of the Designer
- Develop and produce models, drawings and other design outputs consistent with the
contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget demands (Delivery to time,
quality and budget).
- Operate and develop own skills within the functionality of the appropriate work.
- Communicate with internal and external Customers and production teams and with other
functions as directed by the supervisor.
-Perform self-verification of own tasks to ensure completeness and quality of information
and to arrange checking of work by appropriate team members.
-Answer Technical queries about his/her work within their level of knowledge and
-Working as a member of a multi-functional team created to accomplish tasks (e.g.
Construction Engineering team, best practice team, etc.)
-With direction begin to schedule own work to meet target time scales and budget demand
using tools and techniques as directed by his/her supervisor.

EngTech status (or equivalent) plus suitable work based experience.
