Job description


The Head of Engineering Projects (HoEP) leads the engineering delivery for the Combat Air sector of the Electronic Warfare business unit, and reports to the VP Engineering, working closely with the Sector VP and the Sector Chief Engineer. This person leads the engineering delivery community ensuring engineering activities within the sector are on schedule, at the budgeted cost and following company processes for effective Life Cycle Management and Quality.
The HoEP sets the engineering direction ensuring that the engineering priorities are clear and in line with the business priorities set out by the Sector VP. The HoEP has line management responsibilities for the all Project Engineering Managers (PEM) and Project Engineering Leads (PELs) where required, setting clear objectives on milestone adherence, ensuring delivery of work packages on budget, at the agreed cost and meeting engineering quality standards.
The HoEP is an integral member of the site Engineering Leadership Team helping development of our engineering teams and fostering a positive culture aligned with Leonardo's values.

What you will do:

  • Ensure the PEM and Project Engineering Lead (PEL) community are operating effectively in accordance with company processes
  • Ensure the resource forward load is accurate and representative of future needs. Identifying the need for additional vacancies and supporting functions with job description and interviews for new roles (Supported by functions)
  • Ensure all bids and projects follow appropriate and effective Life Cycle Management
  • Act as an independent Chair for other sector Engineering Life Cycle Reviews e.g. Engineering Baseline Reviews, Phase Review Assessor for Engineering Management Plans, Engineering Development Plans
  • Assess, understand and help to mitigate the engineering risks within the sector
  • Mentor, coach and develop the engineering teams actively providing career opportunities for engineers to grow and develop their skills and experiences
  • Identify key or critical resources and develop succession plans
  • Support the Sector VP in monthly Project Reviews, Demand Reviews, Supply Reviews and LoB Reviews
  • Ensure that people within IPTs are allocated appropriately to their skills, development needs and project requirements
  • Ensure that the Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery and People metrics are achieved
  • Effectively manage the engineering priorities within the sector and help resolve any conflicts within teams

What we are looking for:

  • Engineering or Scientific Degree (or equivalent qualifications)
  • Proven track record in engineering management across the entire life cycle
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Proven schedule and budget control
  • Commercially aware
  • Excellent people manager
  • Effective stakeholder management

  • Experience of the Defence Industry
  • Experience of military avionic products
