The Job

Leonardo UK is a leader in the field of airborne sensing and Defensive Aids equipment on military platforms around the world.

The Project Engineering Manager (PEM) operates at the Integrated Project Team level of the Electronic Warfare (EW) Tempest Programme and is responsible for the success of the engineering activities conducted. The Tempest Programme is developing state-of-the-art airborne electronic systems for the world's most advanced fighter aircraft.

You will be involved with novel product development and emerging technologies supported by Leonardo's £60M annual investment in research and development. This project will push the boundaries of innovation, technology, and the ingenuity of our engineering community to bring about a step change in performance and capability of our airborne electronic systems.

What you will do

  • Lead the Engineering aspects of the IPT or Product Line (dependant on size of IPT there may be multiple PEMs)
  • Establish an effective multi-discipline Project Engineering Team to deliver the project outcomes
  • Ensure that the Engineering outcomes for success are clearly defined and well communicated
  • Ensure that the Engineering activities are well planned, costed and scheduled with the Project Planning and Project Management Community. The plans will follow best practise WBS and resource plans captured in SAP.
  • Ensure that the engineering team has a well-documented Engineering Management Plan and that the plan is followed
  • Ensure the Engineering team follows an effectively tailored Life Cycle Management Process, leading the Design Reviews.
  • Oversee the completion of the project outcomes to quality, cost and schedule ensuring that the project performance is accurately reported throughout
  • Maintain an effective dialogue with the IPTL, reporting salient status and risks to the project throughout
  • Work closely with the Systems Design Authority ensuring they are fully informed on technical progress and technical risks, requesting support as required
  • Lead for engineering reviews (Configuration Control Boards, Failure Review Boards, Cost Review Boards)
  • Supporting the IPTL in IPT level reviews such as PPRs, Contract reviews, Life Cycle Management, Risk Reviews, Product Cost Review Boards, Product Design Reviews, team briefs
  • Support the management of Suppliers and project Make or Buy decisions

What we are looking for

You really must have:

  • Proven experience in engineering management and delivery of projects
  • Engineering or scientific Degree qualification (or equivalent)
  • Excellent communicator and able to provide clear direction to teams
  • Ability to manage complex situations with sound judgement and the ability to balance conflicting challenges
  • Commercial and business awareness
  • Experience of working across the full life cycle

It would be nice if you had:

  • Electronic Warfare or RF Systems Experience
  • Military domain experience
  • Development and certification of airborne equipment
  • New Product Introduction experience
