Job description

Typhoon Cockpit Group is responsible for high-level customer requirements analysis and the conceptual design of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) for Typhoon Avionics. This includes definition of the cockpit display moding / symbology, cockpit control behaviour, and the design and validation of the physical layout and lighting of the cockpit. Typhoon Cockpit Group perform HMI design work in support of a number of Typhoon design standards, and multiple customer nations.

As a Cockpit Design Engineer, you will design and develop HMI designs and schemes for the Typhoon Cockpit This will include designing and evolving the modes and capabilities required by the Typhoon Weapon System, such as Sensor capabilities, Navigation and Communications, Weapons targeting and release functions, and defensive aids operations.

  • Undertake analysis of customer requirements, to determine the basis for new and evolved features within the cockpit.
  • Against agreed requirements, establish designs and schemes for the HMI within the Typhoon Cockpit, covering control and symbology aspects.
  • Defining Pilot interfaces with the systems in conjunction with Aircrew and Test Pilots from Typhoon operating Airforces and engineering teams
  • Working with Cockpit and System Integration rig test teams, specify and support the development of test scenarios to demonstrate the proposed HMI design.
  • Support HMI usability assessments with Aircrew.
  • Producing Cockpit technical documentation
  • Through customer review, undertake Aircrew assessment of proposed design schemes, refining as necessary, to establish the detailed schemes to be taken forward for full Cockpit and Avionic Systems design.
  • Coordinate with product safety and product clearance stakeholders, to support aircraft clearances of the Cockpit Designs / Schemes.
  • Work with support engineering, to establish and maintain Aircrew and Groundcrew Technical Publications, to underpin safe operation of the Typhoon Weapon System.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Must be capable of working within agreed standards and procedures and understand the importance of configuration control.
  • Should be capable of participating, and in some cases, leading in technical meetings.
  • Capable of discharging work and maintaining budgetary / schedule responsibilities.
  • Providing coaching to other members of staff, as required.
  • Experience of Design Tools / methodology (e.g. Statemate, Artisan, Rhapsody, UML & Doors) would be advantageous.
  • Experience of JIRA Agile project management tool would be advantageous.
  • Should be capable of deriving system requirements (with support from a line leader) from higher level requirements (Customer etc.).
  • Must be capable of progressing a number of concurrent tasks and reporting on these.
  • Must have previously demonstrated an ability to meet milestones whilst achieving the required level of quality.
  • Experience of working with equipment ICD's and definition of Logical signal level information would be advantageous, but on the job training will be provided.

Additional information:

  • Hybrid Working: there will be a requirement to attend site at least 60% (3 days per week) of the time.
  • Must be suitable for clearance up to SECRET on UK national and UK involved multi-national programmes.

This role will require the person to hold full Security Clearance (SC) prior to working onsite. You will need to obtain a Criminal Record Check and you must currently hold or be eligible and willing to obtain SC. In addition, this role involves direct access to ITAR Material, therefore we can only consider UK Nationals for this position. The Umbrella rate quoted above is the Gross Umbrella rate (i.e. the rate we pay to the Umbrella Company inclusive of ALL employment costs). Please note, the rate paid by the Umbrella will be less, as will a Limited Deemed rate or Agency PAYE rate. Please get in touch to discuss the rates via these different payment vehicles.
