Job description

Portsmouth Water has embarked on a £123m project to build a reservoir at Havant Thicket. This environmentally led project will safeguard future water supplies and provide a place of natural beauty for the community to enjoy. The reservoir will provide wetland habitats, paths for walking, cycling, running and horse-riding, and a visitors' centre providing a café and educational resources for schools. The project will be mainly delivered through a main reservoir contract and two pipeline contracts, with some additional related contracts.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Health and Safety Manager to lead the promotion of safe working practices on the Havant Thicket reservoir project. You will ensure that the delivery of all works are fully compliant with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and other relevant construction legislation and regulations. The successful candidate will need to work at all times in line with our values of Excellence, Integrity and Respect.

Main responsibilities are:

  • Work with contractors to develop health and safety management plans and establish KPIs against which their performance will be monitored.
  • Develop and manage the health, safety and environment team, including an environmental manager and ecological consultants.
  • Regular site visits and inspections, working with operatives at all levels to ensure that the project remains compliant with CDM regulations, but more importantly promotes a 'safety differently' culture - with a focus on providing a safe working environment, enabled by appropriate tools, practices and training.
  • Ensure that accidents are investigated and documentation is updated.
  • Identify new legislation relating to health and safety.
  • Facilitate risk assessments for the client project team and their associated activities.
  • Provide health and safety inductions, in-house training and toolbox talks.
  • Lead, develop and manage health and safety input into reports, presentations and briefings, to initiate informed decisions and update stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage the process of assessing health and safety performance.
  • Seek opportunities to provide a learning legacy from the project

To meet the high demands of this role, we are looking for a person who has the following:
Skills

  • Strong communication and effective stakeholder engagement skills
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to foster collaborative working
  • Proven ability to engage with health and safety stakeholders at local, regional and national levels
  • Excellent knowledge of health and safety legislation, policy and best practice
  • Risk management, method statement review, site inspections and investigations
  • CDM regulations implementation
  • Good analytical skills, with the ability to review and write health and safety management plans, and technical reports which provide analysis, interpretation and root causes of events as well as providing pragmatic recommendations
  • Excel/Powerpoint/Word/Teams

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years' of experience in leading health and safety management on major infrastructure projects, preferably in either the water industry or projects involving significant civil earthworks
  • First Aid at Work certificate
  • CSCS / NEBOSH / IOSH / SMSTS qualifications
  • Street Works qualifications are desirable
  • Chartered Engineer or related professional membership is desirable
  • Full driving licence (all applicants will be required to undertake our driver assessment)
  • Ideally, the successful candidate will have a recognised supervisory qualification or be able to give a commitment to obtain such a qualification

On offer is a salary of 50-60k depending on experience plus other great benefits.
