Job description

Supporting the PM, they will plan, develop, and implement the delivery to ensure the client's engineering requirements are met, and safe operating procedures are adopted to ensure the full scope of works can be delivered in a safe, predictable and controllable manner. They will promote the use of technology to improve the inspection, data gathering and reporting, and be inquisitive to identify ways to improve service offering. They will have a good understanding of the behaviour of the structures they are inspecting, testing, or monitoring, to ensure the client is provided with the best possible information on the defect causes, consequences, and mitigation.


Undertake and lead on complex structural inspections, testing, and monitoring (General Inspections (GI), Principal Inspections (PI) and Special Inspections (SI)) on Highway structures including bridges, culverts gantries, masts and retaining walls in accordance with standards including, but not limited to CS450 and CS 462, to demanding client led delivery deadlines.

  • Assist with meeting client's Engineering needs delivering Engineering solutions of a high quality.
  • Knowledge of Highway Structures Inspection and reporting requirements.
  • Provide efficient Scheme Management support to the PM on all works from simple to complex inspections.
  • To produce and contribute to technical documents and reports to an appropriately high standard.
  • To provide technical guidance and support to the Structures Inspection and testing teams.
  • Through a good technical understanding of structural defects, causes and consequences, have the ability to propose appropriate remedial measures to the client. (Training to help fill gaps in knowledge can be given where required).
  • To assist with providing engineering solutions to problems.
  • To lead the site planning of inspection programmes for medium to large contracts.
  • Completion of RAMS and thorough works planning.
  • Review of reports to ensure high quality delivery for the client.
  • To undertake the inspections & identify / supervise testing to relevant standards in the DMRB.
  • To produce high quality inspection reports on computerised Bridge Management Systems, for example "AGILE" and IAMS, and innovate and utilise technology to optimise the engineering reporting to clients.
  • Effectively cooperative with the client, where required, to manage Roadspace and TM bookings and restrictions, in accordance with client requirements.
  • To mentor and help train less experienced Highway Structures Inspectors.
  • To liaise with Clients and advise on the Engineering requirements of their structural assets, and to optimise our high quality delivery to Clients.
  • To be commercially aware to ensure change is managed appropriately and fairly to provide positive outcomes f.
  • To operate plant & equipment relevant to role (with appropriate training).
  • Have a willingness to work in challenging environments on or near the Highway network including works at height and in confined spaces (with appropriate training - including rope access).
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • To undertake site reconnaissance and liaise with statutory agents, land owners and clients.
  • To have attained, or be working towards, BICS accreditation, in addition to a relevant Civil Engineering related degree qualification.
  • To be self-motivated, have good time management skills, and be proficient with a range of IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office.


Desirable Experience, Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or HND qualified or have a similar related degree/qualification
  • 2 years structures experience
  • Driving: 1 year (Required)
