Overview
The role will assist the Asset Reliability Manager to ensure the safe and robust operation of the ElecLink interconnector, achieving targeted levels of asset availability and ensuring the accurate dispatch of scheduled flows.
As a key member of the operational team the Asset Reliability Engineer will report to the Asset Reliability Manager and will assist overseeing day-to-day on-site operations as well as in-year and any urgent asset management activities for the following primary components of physical infrastructure:
  1. an HVDC converter station in the vicinity of Folkestone, UK;
  2. an HVDC converter station in the vicinity of Calais, France;
  3. a 51 km direct current cable system in the Channel Tunnel; and
  4. a c. 15 km underground alternating current cable system between Folkestone and Sellindge, UK.
The role will assist in the management and any future updates of the Siemens O&M, SPAC Monitoring and Maintenance and expert call-off contracts.
Main responsibilities
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of the O&M contractor(s) to:
    • ensure that the asset is operated and maintained safely, in accordance with best industry practice and manufacturers' specifications and in a manner that ensures availability targets are met and optimises ElecLink's commercial position.
    • put in place and manage business capability to ensure timely, coordinated, and cost-efficient rectification of faults and defects with a view to minimizing plant downtime. This will include a robust spares strategy has been formed and is maintained;
    • ensure that the EPC contractual warranties are maintained;
    • monitor the contractors' ongoing performance vis-a-vis contractual KPIs and obligations; and
    • ensure that all operational risks are properly identified, understood, catalogued and mitigated.
  • Monitor the contractor's performance against agreed KPI's
  • Review and comment on contractors Risk Assessments and Method Statements in respect of General Safety
  • Conduct work site review of work being undertaken by the contractors to ensure that it meets business expectations and is in line with industry best practice
  • Where appropriate, assist in any incident investigation that is undertaken by any of our contractors, with particular emphasis on any safety or asset / operational incidents
  • Assist the Asset Reliability Manager and in conjunction with the O&M Service Providers, co-ordinate trips and short notice forced outages, return to service, operational security incidents and emergency response
  • Provide Asset Operational input to highlight areas to achieve continuous improvement of operational procedures, systems and processes
  • Assist the Asset Reliability Manager and the Commercial Manager to ensure that the Operators are trained and authorised to operate all the operational systems in the control room
  • Monitor the EDS system on site to ensure that it meets the operational needs of the business
  • Take an active part in monitoring the physical security at the ElecLink operational locations
  • Act as the backup point of contact for Eurotunnel with regards to operational co-ordination and / or queries
  • Monitor operational expenditure and make recommendations on cost saving, should any such opportunities become apparent to you
  • Be a key member of the ElecLink 'On-call Team' which provides 24/7 remote and on-site response on a rota basis to manage operational issues on the interconnector. This role will also support in ensuring that adequate capability is always available to meet the business event driven response requirements to the ElecLink HVDC asset.
Minimum Standards & Selection Criteria
Experience required
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role at an interconnector, windfarm, transmission system operator or power generator
  • Basic knowledge of operational and maintenance requirements for HVDC interconnectors
  • Good understanding of the importance of HVDC interconnectors in the wider energy mix.
  • Experience of monitoring contractors
  • Experience in and the understanding of fault-finding process and asset related incident investigation

Education
  • Educated to A level / NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in mechanical or electrical engineering or other relevant qualification and/or work experience

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft suite of products
  • Attention to detail and a strong focus on getting things right in the first place

  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of French would be advantageous, but not essential
  • Frequent travel will be required between Folkestone Calais (France) and London.
