The Opportunity:

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Test Technician to join QinetiQ at our Environmental Test Centre (ETC) at MoD Shoeburyness. The ETC is the UK's largest Environmental Test Facility for Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME), working with our customers and colleagues you will be delivering mission critical Test and Evaluation Data for in-service systems and the next generation of UK Defence Munitions.

Reporting to the Environmental Trials Team Leaders you will work in our expanding Delivery Team using a Variety of test equipment to simulate some of the most challenging environments around the world through vibration, shock & climatic facilities, OME will be put through their paces to ensure they are safe and suitable for service.

What will I be doing?

Once fully trained in the role you will become an integral part of the delivery team running trials within our Environmental Test Facilities.

The key aspects of the role are:

  • Lead Environmental Test Trials through our facilities working in collaboration with our Subject Matter Experts, Customers and other product validation sites.
  • Pro-actively work with Technical and Project Teams as well as colleagues to achieve problem resolution in alignment with key milestones.
  • Use specialist software and test equipment to deliver Vibration & Shock testing on Defence munitions, acquiring data, analyse data and report results to Technical and Project Teams.
  • Manage timescales in accordance with project milestones for yourself and includes the daily tasking of your accompanying Test Technician.
  • Identify, fit and validate Data acquisition Instrumentation for the tests undertaken e.g. Accelerometers, Thermocouples, PRT's, Force transducers, Conditioning amplifiers.
  • Support the Environmental Trials Team Leaders in the Training and development of others within own skillset, collaboratively delivering resilience and growth.
  • Collaboratively engage with QinetiQ's safety culture and working procedures.



What do I need?

Essential

  • Experience of working in a structural testing environment in any of the following but not limited to:
    • Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH)
    • Acoustic measurement
    • Structural Stress / Strain
    • Highly Accelerate Life Testing (HALT)
    • Destructive / Non-Destructive Shock testing
    • Structural Analysis, FEA Modelling
  • HNC in Engineering or equivalent qualification. Demonstrable experience to an equivalent level would be considered.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues and teams of all levels including presentation of information skills.
  • Practical competence in the use of hand tools required for fixture assembly / disassembly.
  • Competence in the use of IT equipment and software such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Must be willing to be flexible / willing to undertake changing work tasks.
  • Must have a valid UK driving licence and access to own mode of travel to get to and from work.

Desired

  • Familiarity with Vibration & Shock Issues relating to Electro-magnetic Shakers or Seismic Mass Shock machines.
  • Experience with calibration of instrumentation.
  • Understanding of Dynamically induced failure modes in Mechanical Structures.
  • Experience with Data Acquisition systems for example: Siemens LMS TestLab, Data Physics Signal Star, Signal Calc.
  • Experience of working with Explosive material or similar environments e.g. Lithium Batteries.
