Our Energy & Power team is focused on providing a whole system approach, offering end-to-end service to support our clients in energy networks, thermal generation, renewable generation and storage solutions. We are helping our clients meet the challenges faced in countries and cities across the globe, providing innovative solutions to address the challenges of replacing conventional thermal power plants with renewable generation.


About the Opportunity

We are committed to playing a leadership role in Global Energy Transition. Our UK and Continental Europe team is growing and we're looking for a Principal Cable Engineer to help lead us to success.

Our Power and Energy team provides a range of services to our transmission and distribution clients. This includes work on transmission system assets, HVDC interconnectors, energy storage systems and wind farms.

As part of our diverse team, you'll be providing a range of services throughout the design process on all elements of HV cable systems (mostly from 132kV up to 500kV). This includes feasibility design through to the preparation of technical specifications, production of detailed construction drawings and design compliance checks for our major energy clients.

Your technical expertise will ensure design compliance and governance and you'll be considered a trusted leader by clients and by the team, confidently interfacing with them throughout design phases. As a team leader you'll enjoy working collaboratively with other members of the design team and encourage others to think innovatively in the way we deliver solutions to clients.

We have offices in London, Birmingham, Reading, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow or Exeter. However, with offices throughout the UK, we can be flexible about location and are happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours to suit you and our business.

Qualifications - External


* Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering.
* Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
* Extensive experience in a cable related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
* Able to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all projects stages.
* Experienced user of CYMCAP to support cable system design
* Experience of working at EHV transmission voltages
* Experience in the design of HV and EHV cable systems, for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
* Developing HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
* Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design
* Prepare plant and equipment technical specification, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports
* Ensuring correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects, attend, and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
* Support factory inspections Test (FAT)
* Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, Sheath induced voltage calculations and other.
* Perform design reviews, verification of design
* Ensuring all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures
* Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
* Assist with temporary works design schemes.
* Maintain good working relations with client / designer / Team, together with our supply chain.
* Advise engineers on setting out methods and techniques.
* Ensure that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works. Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the programme to proceed without delay.
* Prepare written risk assessments and method statements for the control of the works.
* Ensure that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the PMP / Specification, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality
