Trainee Boat Builder

Salary: £10.80 per hour, (Potential to earn £30,000 per year on completion of training and with regular overtime)

Employment Type: 18 month fixed term training contract with a view to be offered a permanent role following successful completion of the training programme.

Training Programme Hours: 8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, for 12 full weeks, at the start of your employment

Working hours: 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday, plus optional overtime, upon completion of the 12 week training course.

Working & Training location: Various locations in Poole

About the Role

Matchtech have partnered with Sunseeker International to source 30 Trainee Boat Builders based in Poole Harbour on a fixed-term contract.

This is an 18 month practical training programme that will commence with a full time workshop course for 12 weeks. In the safety of a new training workshop, you and your course colleagues will learn practical trade skills and the yacht building theory to underpin your boat building competence. You will learn basic; carpentry skills, electrical installation skills, engineering skills, plumbing skills and, marine composites skills. In addition, you will be taught how to work both effectively and safely in a busy manufacturing environment. You will be paid £10.80 per hour whilst at college.

You won't stop there. Once your 12 week intensive workshop course is finished, you'll work with some of the best trades in the marine industry to develop your skills at work, recording evidence of your development for a further 9 months before you become ready for your final assessment at the end of your first year.

On completion of your training, you'll be rewarded with a nationally recognised level 2 engineering qualification and the start of a lifetime opportunity in the marine sector.

Pay rates:

  • £10.80 - you'll receive this from day one of your training, as a basic rate of pay
  • £11.75 - after twelve weeks of service, your pay rate will automatically increase to £11.75, in line with Agency Worker Regulations (AWR)
  • £13.20 - after 26 weeks of continuous service, you'll be eligible for a further pay increase, following a performance observation

What you need to apply:

  • A can-do attitude with the commitment and ambition to learning a construction trade.
  • Able to commence employment on the September 2023 with no planned holiday or other absence for the first 12 weeks.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • No unspent criminal convictions.
  • Be able to provide references for the previous 3 years.
  • If you hold an engineering qualification at level 2 or higher(such as an engineering based apprenticeship or a degree in engineering) you will not be eligible for this programme.

If successful, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre in in Bournemouth. This will involve a short, basic maths and English test, a one to one interview and a practical task. Those who require further development will be given extra tuition. This date is non-moveable and attendance at the assessment centre is essential so please only apply if you are able to attend in person on this date.
