CAD Engineer/Technician

Analyses assembly tolerances for proper fits and clearances.

Actively participates in the decision-making process for assigned projects. Provides expertise in recommending design and redesign options.

Works directly with vendors to resolve manufacturing and design issues.

Works with appropriate departments to design and document fixtures as needed for inspection, testing and manufacturing purposes based on sketches and verbal instruction.

Collaborates with machine shop and outside vendors to fabricate quality models and fixtures.

Provides guidance and expertise to lower-level CAD designers.

Revises drawings based on markups or redlines to support change order requests.

Participates in facilitated training designed to increase knowledge of issues related to medical device design, development and manufacturing, such as GMP, etc.

Keeps abreast of new technology in design/drafting and makes recommendations for purchase of new software tools.

This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site).

Technical Knowledge and Skills

Associate's degree or two-year vocational/technical diploma in Mechanical Design or Design/Drafting Technology fields. 5 years minimum using SolidWorks for design in a manufacturing or technical field; 8 years minimum without a degree. Demonstrated proficiency at a fully competent level in Solidworks CAD system. Able to create complex 2D detail drawings complete with all sections, details, and notation to clearly define component and assembly design intent. Proficient at applying standard dimensioning and tolerancing including appropriate GD&T in alignment with ASME Y14.5. Working knowledge of injection moulding, casting, and machining manufacturing process as it relates to component design. Depth of knowledge of SOPs, GMP/FDA/IEC/ANSI/ISO 9000 regulations and proven skill in integrating into engineering designs highly desirable.

Ability to provide leadership for projects of limited scope within the department. Ability to guide lower-level drafters and designers in troubleshooting and carrying out design activities. Customer focused, results oriented professional, team player. Self-directed; demonstrates initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision. Highly organised; ability to manage multiple tasks. Excellent at communicating, especially technical information: interpersonal, listening, verbal and written. Able to create 3D models and drawings from verbal instruction, sketches, and specifications.

Impact and Scope

Works under general supervision, with direction given only in terms of broadly stated objectives and desired outcomes. Impacts project completion dates and product launch dates. Failure to meet project timelines may result in lost opportunity costs and sales revenues.

Planning and Decision Making

Uses considerable judgement in scheduling and coordinating project workload as well as the selection of techniques and equipment. Strong problem-solving skills required. Works under limited supervision (usually taking direction from manager or project engineer). Broad direction is given at the beginning of the project and at infrequent intervals during the project. Independently plans, schedules, and performs workload to meet project deadlines. Handles multiple tasks and plans activities to meet objectives. May coordinate an assigned project of limited scope. With given information/parameters, makes recommendations for technical and procedural advancement. May provide work direction to lower-level designers.
