Job description

Position title:

Software Engineer - Linux and C++

Location:

Farnborough, Hampshire.

Working hours:

37.5 hours per week

Job Purpose:

Develop low-level areas of a new generation of a new Radar Simulator product line. Advancing Linux, VMs, networking and test capabilities.

Scope / dimensions:

The role is to setup new Linux environments and the procedures to support their maintenance. VMs are required to create a representative test environment, expanded through the lifecycle of the product.

A significant amount of networking development is required in communicating between cards and switches. Understanding and porting/modernising pre-existing application code will support the wider task of recreating wider system functionality later.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for advancing the foundational developments of the new radar simulator, including Linux, BSPs and networking.

Setting up VMs for several areas of testing. Stubbed external devices, test automation etc.

Learning and porting sections of existing application code into the new architecture.

Contributing to documentation, ICDs and Specs, around the new system.

General: Delivering tickets contributing to the overall build, to time and quality expectations.

General: Reporting status and progress on developments. Escalating issues early and pro-actively.

General: Integrating with the team and the pre-existing development processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Essential: Significant experience of developing with Linux, and compiling low-level elements of it, such as Makefiles and BSPs.
  • Essential: Significant experience of C++ and cross-compiling.
  • Desirable. Understanding networking issues; VMs, IP connections, as well as JSON.
  • Full understanding of the system engineering lifecycle, V-model and the typical working practices of a defense industry project.
  • Understanding needs of working with Technical documentation, ICDs and requirements.
  • Tools: A background in using config management tools, such as Git, Jira and Visual Studio.
  • Tools: Accomplished in dealing with any standard Microsoft Office and Windows applications.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: SC Cleared (or ability to obtain and maintain clearance).
