Job description
The opportunity:
This role presents the opportunity for a suitably skilled individual to assist
as a deputy to the Radar and Advanced Targeting authority, whilst acquiring the knowledge and experience
to progress and become an approved signatory for structural integrity and a named individual on the UK
Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS).
Your role as a Lead Mechanical Specialist will be to support our design, develop and testing of our world
leading radar and electro-optic products in attaining associated structural certification. You will be utilising
state-of-the-art methods, technology and tools to explore all aspects of the development lifecycle, including
stress and thermal analysis, requirements analysis, design, implementation, test, build and product support.
You will be directly involved with the agreement on the testing (Safety of Flight, Qualification, Design
Proving etc.) which supports flight & structural clearance release of Company products. You will be involved
in the review and acceptance of various manufacturing processes used in company products: castings,
brazed assemblies, bonded structures, laser welding and the development and acceptance for structural
certification of new technologies, processes and methods. You will interface with customers (internal and
external) on many aspects within the design lifecycle and liaise closely with Engineers from other
disciplines, including Design Integrity, Systems, Electronics, Project Engineering Leads and appropriate
suppliers.
What you'll do as a Lead Mechanical Specialist:
Provide guidance and recommendations on the environmental requirements and testing to
meet product Airworthiness/Structural Integrity release for a given application: experimental,
development, series production etc.
Undertake independent reviews and guidance of evidence artefacts which support
Airworthiness / Structural clearance approval including: Product Specifications, Mechanical
Analysis Reports (Stress & Thermal), Qualification Test Procedures and Test Reports,
Design Standards including Stress Critical Parts, ICDS, AEII, Operating & Maintenance
Manuals, Compliance/Verification Matrix, Supplier Supporting Evidence and other artefacts.
Liaise with Mechanical Engineers and Stress Engineers in development of appropriate
models and reports to the required standards for the application of use.
Adhere to standards for mechanical engineering best practice.
Support the mechanical management team in process and departmental improvement and
development activities.
What we need from you:
You will hold a degree in a relevant discipline (for example Mechanical Engineering,
Materials Science or Aeronautical Engineering) or demonstrate equivalent job related
experience.
You will be a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Full Member of a recognised Engineering
Institution (e.g. IMechE) or have the necessary competencies to obtain Chartered status
with the IMechE.
Working knowledge on the application of Finite Element Modelling (FEM) and techniques.
Working knowledge on the application of a wide range of classical hand calculation
techniques for static and dynamic loading conditions, fatigue and fracture assessment (of
land based and airborne equipment).
It would be desirable for you to have knowledge and experience in support of becoming a
named individual on the UK Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation
Scheme (DAOS).
Working knowledge on the use of a wide range of materials used for airborne structural
applications.
An understanding of specifying loading environments (based on recognised military/civil
standards) applicable to airborne equipment is required.
Experience and understanding of qualification testing of equipment in support of
Airworthiness/Structural clearance approval (as part of Product Certification) is important.
Working knowledge of the Classification & Grading of Stress Critical/Aircraft Standard Parts
to recognised military/civil standards is required.
Experience of undertaking independent reviews of Company Products.
