Job description
This is a key role and integral to the success of our client's projects.
You will be primarily employed in a technical role, tasked with the engineering of solutions in a broad range of markets. You will be expected to have competency in a wide range of tasks, be actively involved in maintenance of the relevant QA procedures, peer reviewing others in the majority of tasks and taking responsibility for the technical output of others.
Role and Responsibilities
- Manning and running Naval Architecture aspects of projects and contracts won by the Company including but not limited to:
- Coaster transportation engineering
- Barge transportation engineering
- Lifting studies
- Naval Architecture studies
- Be a recognised expert in at least one of the computer packages listed below, including but not limited to
- Autohydro hull models for transport intact and damaged stability and float-offs
- Strand7 FEA models for structural designs
- Orcaflex models for mooring analysis both static and dynamic
- HydroD models for hydrodynamic analysis
- RSTAB for space frame analysis
- Peer review of tasks above, where your competency has been proven
- On site supervision of applicable works particularly complex jobs with multiple sub-contractors (optional at this level)
- Completing scopes on time and within the budget allocated, and ensuring more junior staff do the same
- Training and assisting more junior engineers via one-to-one, seminars, writing training material and other delivery methods
- Assisting with the costing of new enquiries for both new and existing contracts
- Follow the company Health, Safety and the Environment requirements at all times
- Have a working knowledge of a wide range of the company Quality Assurance requirements in relation to this work and ensure they are met at all times
- Take part in the continual improvement of the company QA procedures via participation in review meetings, non-conformance reviews and audits
- Lead the improvement of the internal technical processes of the Company
- Opportunistic marketing of the company and its services to existing and potential new clients
- Any other tasks or duties outside your normal work as the Company may reasonably require
Primary Objectives
- Deliver engineering work on time and on budget
- Ensure your and others engineering work is of a standard
- Improve company technical procedures
- Mentor and improve junior members of staff
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Technical Aptitude - role requires the ability to complete key tasks with rare assistance from more senior staff
- Problem Solving - the role requires the ability to solve problems under sometimes very tight restrictions and innovative thinking of benefit
- Diligent - delivery of projects is reliant on staff being responsible and ensuring their tasks are carried out properly and on time, as well as ensure others in the company are doing same
- Good communicator - able to deal with all levels of staff, from successfully passing on skills and techniques to junior engineers up to presenting designs to external parties
- Competency in Engineering Software - Naval Architecture analysis software (Autohydro/Ocraflex/HydroD preferred but equivalents acceptable) and calculations software (TEDDS preferred but equivalents acceptable)
- Practical Knowledge - site or yard experience is of benefit but not essential
- Clean Driver's License - required for attending meetings and site work
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2nd Class degree BEng or higher in Naval Architecture & Engineering or Small Craft OR Relevant degree in engineering subject at 2nd class level minimum or equivalent OR lesser degrees subject to proven experience
- Experienced and competent in 4 varied Naval Architecture/Engineering tasks
- Commenced internal engineering training scheme
