Matchtech are working with a key client to support the recruitment of 2-3 Product Safety Engineers to work on high profile defence projects in the north of the UK on a hybrid basis. These positions are offering hybrid working on a 12 month FTC.

Job description

Product Safety Engineer

12 month Fixed Term Contract

Hybrid Working (Barrow-In-Furness)

You will be supporting the Engineering Delivery Organisations in all facets of Product Safety engineering, throughout key stages of Life Cycle Management. You will provide the Engineering Delivery Manager(s) with technical safety advice in support of the support of the client's safety claims.
This role is specifically targeting at providing and requires experience in:

  • Developing and delivering a defensible artefact for the client to meet its legal obligations as an operating entity.
  • Inform the Whole-boat of the designs constraints that a function/system has, allowing the Whole-boat to manage the constraints or help inform the client for their consideration in the context of risk.
  • Developing derived claims (from the whole-boat claims) and deriving their inference (to support the above bullets).
  • Management of a junior engineers in the enactment of the above.

There will also be the opportunity to be responsible for other areas of Product Safety within the delivery domain typically:

  • Safety requirements capture and management,
  • Failure conditions identification, analysis and management,
  • Application of technical principles,
  • Creation/maintenance of documentation and
  • Continuous improvement of the safety management system.

Job Details
To develop, execute, evaluate and the delivery of the component/function/system analysis and author supporting documentation recognising:

  • The safety aspects of the life-cycle framework and its gates,
  • Stakeholder needs.

Your main responsibilities:

  • To liaise with both internal and external stakeholders as required ensuring that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate agreed.
  • To support and enact Whole-boat safety policy, strategies and deliver evidence (of enactment) to stakeholders for concurrence.
  • To derive a case(s) (for the structure/Function), in line with Assurance Case methods (SCSC-159) to support the whole-boat claims and objectives, gain concurrence (with whole-boat) in the development of an off-contract position.
  • To articulate and present technical arguments that are proportionally and are clear, logically and understood by the stakeholder community.
  • To undertake Product analysis in support of the functional design to provide advice in identifying areas of concern (through recognised techniques) to support trade-offs by informing that design.
  • To support and enact the directed or derived safety processes to support the analysis of the functional design (in the context of its proportional contribution to controllability) for each relevant submarine function, to support the delivery (of the measure of importance) and understanding to whole-boat.
  • Ensure (from a structure/function) that product safety evidence is authored, concurred and controlled to support each gate of the engineering framework.
  • To undertake peer reviews or checking/verification tasks as directed.
  • Assist the Senior Engineering Delivery Manager - Product Safety with the maintenance and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System, including production and maintenance of Process Instructions.
  • To identify, assess and implement areas of improvement within the Safety Management System, with agreement sought from Senior Engineering Delivery Manager - Product Safety.
  • To contribute to identification and closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages.
  • To support any Whole-boat audit, whether internal or external and to ensure any actions (from the audit, if directed) are appropriately managed.

Your skills and qualifications
Ideally Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) degree qualified or equivalent qualification and evidence of working towards professional chartership, although candidates with an appropriate level of experience will considered.
Demonstrable experience and/or understanding in more than one of the following safety practices:

  • Management of complex tasks.
  • Developing and supporting Product Assurance Cases.
  • Techniques to identify and support the derivation and understanding of constraints on the product in the context of developing a risk position for the client.
  • Use of good practice through such standards as IEC 15288 etc.

Consideration will be given to experience and/or understanding in the following practices;

  • Deriving Product requirements identification and capture.
  • Product analysis using internationally recognised techniques.
  • Knowledge of Engineering Frameworks.
  • Delivery of Product Management Systems to defence or other internationally recognised standards.
  • Experience of review and appraisal of Product engineering and analysis techniques (to gain product knowledge) and influencing others with constructive feedback.
  • Auditing Product Safety Management Systems, learning and sharing and influencing others with constructive feedback.

An accomplished engineer with a passion for 'things Product Safety'.
Ability to influence other stakeholders, internal and external to the role, to achieve Product benefits.
