Position Description

Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM)

Role Description

The RCM Principal Engineer will be the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the delivery of RCM outputs, including studies, Operating Contexts and input into other relevant support deliverables. Activities will be undertaken alone or as the lead of an RCM team, with appropriate support of the Engineering Manager and RCM Consultant Engineer.

The RCM principal engineer will have expert knowledge and understanding of defence equipment support methodology and will have an understanding of the relevant Ministry of Defence (MoD), industry and corporate standards that cover RCM activities. They will also have knowledge of other Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) disciplines and engineering processes in order to understand how RCM outputs influence the design and interrelate with ILS and Safety activities.

The RCM principal engineer should have a comprehensive understanding of the definition, application and control of AR&M programme management activities and they will be confident interfacing with internal stakeholders, suppliers and customers.

Specific Core Duties

The following activities are typical of work that may be carried out by the RCM principal engineer, in full or part dependent on the role:

  • Deliver RCM studies, Operating Contexts and post-analysis reports to agreed scope, quality and timescales, and in accordance with DEFSTAN 00-045 and BR1313A methodology
  • Deliver fully populated and validated Toolkit (TLK) files to the MoD
  • Derive appropriate maintenance schedules using RCM techniques
  • Conduct Methodology Audits of RCM analyses prior to formal delivery to MoD
  • Attend Maintenance Review & Approval Boards (MRABs) to undertake reviews of derived RCM maintenance
  • Provide appropriate RCM knowledge and input for Engineering Design Reviews
  • Initiate amendments to maintenance resulting from design change
  • Conduct periodic quality assurance checks of Maintenance Task Instructions (MTIs) and initiate appropriate rectification activity/actions
  • Convene and/or attend maintenance-related meetings with internal and external organisations
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the RCM engineering team

In addition, and as required by the programme, the Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (RCM) may be called upon to carry out the role of Maintenance Demonstration Co-ordinator. In these circumstances, the following activities will be carried out in support of Maintenance Demonstrations:

  • Produce and agree with the Customer the Whole Boat Maintenance Demonstration strategy and plan
  • Produce and co-ordinate the Maintenance Demonstration test schedule and criteria
  • Produce and agree the process for collating Maintenance Demonstration evidence
  • Produce and agree the process for accept/reject criteria for Maintenance Demonstrations

Experience

  • Extensive level of domain knowledge over the full range of RCM activities and how they relate to ILS and Safety. Experience of delivering RCM tasks in appropriate phases of the programme lifecycle
  • Extensive knowledge of the MoD Unit Maintenance Management System (UMMS) tool
  • Knowledge of the principles of Availability, Reliability & Maintainability (AR&M)
  • Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle and how support activities align to it, with some experience of operating in a number of phases.
  • Have a strong awareness of Product Safety and SHE.
  • Good communication skills and be able to interact with stakeholders
  • Provides technical leadership, coaches and mentors others. May lead a team of engineers.
