Job description

Senior Protection Settings Engineer

As a Senior Protection Settings Engineer, you will be responsible for producing protection settings and configuration files for implementation across the UKPN network at voltage levels ranging from 132 kV to 11 kV. This is a permanent position reporting to the Design Manager.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce protection settings and suitable relay logic.
  • Supply complete settings to customers and record settings in asset management data records.
  • Quality Assurance of colleagues' work and those produced by external partners.
  • Attend Design Review meetings to ensure protection and control settings requirements are met.
  • Support the wider UKPN business in technical matters related to protection settings.
  • Be a point of reference in the business for primary and grid settings queries.
  • Identify cost-effective solutions for network protection.
  • Assist the business in reviewing protection mal operations.
  • Create settings for non-planned network events like protection depletions.


Job Requirements:

  • Experience in electrical engineering within the 11 kV to 132 kV network, including design and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of power distribution network protection systems at all voltage levels.
  • Understanding of communication protocols in relation to protection and control systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and drawings.
  • Capability to work unsupervised, set targets, and deliver settings.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and applications such as Word, Excel, DIgSILENT, AMTECH, and SAP database.
  • Minimum HND qualification in electrical engineering, preferably with relevant protection experience.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartership.

Nature and Scope:
This role is largely desk-based but may require visits to operational and construction sites, as well as meetings with manufacturers and internal review meetings.
