Job description
Our tier 1 water contractor client are looking to strengthen their Engineering team with a Regional Discipline Lead (Design Management) for their Thames Water Framework based out of Hampton, Maple Lodge or Walthamstow offices.
Hybrid working will be available and the candidate would be expected to do some travel across region when required. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out normal design and/or design management related project work as part of this role (typically 50:50 RDL:Project work ratio).
In addition to the project work, you will sit within the regional functional leadership team and support wider business improvement and integration. You will be responsible for the leadership of the discipline in region, ensuring that the discipline is the right size and shape and has the correct competencies and capacity in region. You will also ensure that the standard practices are applied in region and contribute to the development of the discipline.
You will report directly to the Regional Engineering Lead (REL) & Design Management Technical Discipline Lead (TDL) as appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Provide line management, mentoring, training, development/succession plans for your direct reports. Look after their wellbeing (work perspective). This includes annual objectives setting, objectives progress monitoring, undertaking regular 1-2-1 conversations (Let's Talk) and recording outcomes.
- Manage the supply and demand of competent Design Managers for the region. This shall include growth planning and recruitment accordingly. Manage the region long-term and short-term resource forecasting.
- Gain allocative efficiency by appointing best fit, Design Managers.
- Manage outsourced design in accordance with the requirements laid out by the Engineering Director or their nominated appointee. Liaise with the DM TDL/REL over supplier contractual agreements.
- Promote and maintain continuous improvement by managing regional and company-wide processes, procedures and guidance notes in region as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with legal, company policy, regulatory and statutory obligations and requirements. Including the use of common, secure, information management systems. Ensure that our CDM Regulations duties are for all duty holders.
- Ensure operational excellence. Evaluate performance through Monitoring, measuring, analysis and evaluation, customer satisfaction surveys, internal audits and management review and use this to continually improve.
- Carry out design management audits and analyse results data to provide pinpointed improvements in the relevant areas.
- Carry out Senior Manager Tours (SMTs) to review design compliance on live project sites - target 1 per month.
- Support the Regional Engineering Lead and Design Manager Technical Discipline Lead in providing timely, verified, project metric data. Be able to account for our performance.
- Manage the design reporting system and carry out analysis of the design KPIs in region.
- Ensure the design team is joined up in its thinking and coordinated particularly with respect to technical governance and cooperation with other members of the Project Team.
- Drive an integrated design and build culture, value driven and client focused, into each Design Manager and team. Encourage great communication and awareness. Be present and be a presence.
- Design safe, buildable, operable solutions. Ensure technical and SHEQ governance. Help promote the right H&S 'Behaviour in Design'
- Work to client framework Conditions of Contract and Work Order requirements.
- Work to the Design manager TDL Engineering Requirements and feedback information to support them to lead.
- Engage with the Design Management Cross Framework CoP and other SMEs as required.
- Set, meet or beat financial and programme project or programme targets.
- Deliver to meet or beat customer expectations. Maintain or gain their trust in you and your team.
- Ensure that Design management is aligned with the Operational Delivery team
Skills/experience/qualifications
- IT skills including MS Office, advanced Excel, Teams, SharePoint, (ProjectWise - desirable although not essential)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic working environment
- Significant line / team management experience in a Design and Build environment
- Water sector experience with an understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes (our client is open to candidates coming from a mechanical, electrical, process or civils design background)
- Working knowledge of CDM and construction Health & Safety
- Proven track record of delivering on time and to budget
- A positive, results focused, flexible can-do approach with the ability to influence and motivate others.
