Job description

This position, based in Northamptonshire, reporting to the Head of Performance Engineering or their designee. The successful candidate will oversee and optimize all aspects of the operation for one car during race and test events. Responsibilities include driver communication, performance development, run planning, car preparation, legality, reliability, setup, tire management, and coordinating the efforts of engineers assigned to the car.

This role requires extensive travel, attending all tests and races either at the trackside. The candidate will also provide occasional support for simulator tests and new car builds.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster teamwork and effective communication to build strong working relationships across all personnel and departments.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the car at the track.
  • Manage the car during race and test events, providing clear instructions and recommendations to the driver, mechanics, and engineers.
  • Monitor legality measurements and implement necessary car adjustments to ensure compliance.
  • Lead the car crew, including mechanics and engineers, ensuring all tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Define the run program and plan setup changes in collaboration with the Performance Engineer, following the program set by the Head of Performance Engineering.
  • Guide the Performance Engineer in supporting the setup, run plan, and analysis for the weekend's activities.
  • Collaborate with the Driver Performance Engineer to align on setup direction and driver guidance.
  • Work with trackside engineers, including those specializing in powertrain, vehicle, and aerodynamic performance, to maximize car performance.
  • Manage and communicate the tire heating and usage plan in coordination with Tyre Engineers, other Race Engineers, and the Head of Performance Engineering. Ensure proper implementation with tire technicians.
  • Coordinate with the Chief Mechanic and Number One mechanic to ensure smooth operations during car preparation and sessions.
  • Partner with other Race Engineers to prepare pre-event information and ensure consistency in procedures and plans across all cars at each event.
  • Oversee or provide guidance during simulator test sessions.
  • Analyze and summarize technical data, including simulation data, geometry info, tire information, 7-post data, and wind tunnel data.
  • Produce written reports and summaries based on data analysis.
  • Develop procedures and test plans, supervising tests such as rig tests.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (minimum 2:1)
  • Formula 1 trackside experience, ideally as a Race or Performance Engineer
  • Experience in other racing formulas is advantageous

Specialised Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid technical background in racing car performance and vehicle dynamics
  • Experience in car/system design, operation, build, and preparation
  • Ability to maintain high standards in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations
  • Strong decision-making skills, with a methodical and analytical approach to problem-solving
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work well within a team environment at all levels
  • Positive, can-do attitude with a willingness to assist others
  • Ability to work sympathetically with colleagues and integrate well within a team

Equipment and Applications:

  • Proficient in ATLAS
  • Strong understanding of lap time simulation tools and simulator environments
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The role demands the ability to prioritize effectively in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment while maintaining a methodical approach. Extensive domestic and international travel is required, along with flexibility to work long hours, including weekends.

The role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds, frequent bending, squatting, and manual dexterity. The work environment is fast-paced and mentally demanding, involving exposure to machinery, race cars, 7-post rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. Compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy and all relevant statutory Health and Safety legislation is mandatory for all employees.
