In Service Submarine Support Engineer

Our defence client has a requirement for an experienced In Service Submarine Support Engineer to join their team. The post sits within Design Authority Structures (DAST) section in the SDA In-Service Submarines Platform Engineering Team and plays a fundamental role in engineering and safety decision making by assisting Struct2 on structural and mechanical issues relating to Fasteners, Hatches, LETs and Doors for all in-service submarines.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring in-service submarines remain safe to operate with respect to Structural Strength when at sea, alongside and during docking/undocking evolutions by assessing condition of the Structural elements by assisting Struct2 with ensuring the design intent of fasteners, hatches and LETs structure.
- Setting Design Authority Requirements (DAR) for surveys, repairs, and concessions within the remit of Structural Strength and for the Struct2 areas of responsibility for maintenance periods carried out on in-service submarines.
- Assessing OPDEFs for their impact on the Struct2 areas of responsibility and supporting Struct2 to issue DA requirements to address them and guidance to operators to mitigate any risks
- Developing design changes for secondary structure in conjunction with Struct2 to improve safety or capability when required.
- Reviewing Design Changes for impact on structural strength in relation to secondary structure and advising Struct2 of any concerns or design challenges.
Essential Experience/Skills Requirement
- Professional registration in line with current SDA Policy.
- A Level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, or a lesser qualification with significant relevant and demonstrable previous experience.
- Nuclear Introductory Course
- System safety Awareness
- System Safety in Action (SSIA)
- Safety & Environmental Management (SEMT)
- 4 years' experience in a maritime post.
- Minimum 2 years' experience of submarine specific structures.
