Job description


Our client, a prominent player in the rail infrastructure sector, is looking for an experienced Head of Design to lead the design and engineering obligations for a major railway project. This permanent position involves overseeing internal roles and supply chain organisations to ensure the successful delivery of the project's technical solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Chief Engineer Group (CEG) and Design Management Group (DMG) to control and certify the technical solutions.
  • Ensure integration of all technical elements by coordinating Design Consultants and Design & Build Contractors.
  • Liaise with stakeholders including HS2 to oversee requirements, design integration, and certification.
  • Monitor compliance with health and safety legislation and other relevant regulations.
  • Review and certify designs and completed works for technical compliance and integration.
  • Support the development and management of design programmes and packages.
  • Oversee the production and maintenance of essential design documentation.
  • Lead a team of multidisciplinary engineers and manage other stakeholders in achieving project objectives.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience in a similar role within a large engineering organisation, preferably within the rail sector.
  • Degree in Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience with significant senior roles in technical engineering.
  • Membership in a professional body such as the Institute of Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in relevant health and safety legislation, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Strong organisational abilities and the capability to manage large, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 and other relevant legislation.
