Job summary
A Major Projects team are looking for an Interim Highway Designer who has a traffic engineering background. This person needs to assist a Principal Designer (PD) and the Project Manager (PM) for the delivery of a Multi-million Pound project.

Job description
Overall Purpose of Job
- Assist the Principal Designer (PD) and Project Manager (PM) in delivering the design for a major highway realignment and public realm improvements project.
- Involvement in both RIBA Stage 3 and 4 design phases.
- Address design changes during construction, working closely with the PM to resolve site queries and adapt designs as needed.
Job Context
- Report to the PD for day-to-day design delivery.
- Assist the Senior Site Engineer and PM as instructed by the PD.
- Proficiency in Highways Design and the Manual Contract Document for Highways Works.
- Produce construction series drawings using Autodesk AutoCAD.
- Attend design meetings and prepare technical notes for PD review.
- Manage Health and Safety and risk management responsibilities.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Manage workshops for stakeholders, architects, and designers.
- Liaise with external organizations (e.g., other boroughs, Network Rail, TfL) for design approvals.
- Research, design, and evaluate alternative solutions to identified problems.
- Organize workload and supervise project members to meet targets.
- Assist the Site Engineer with design-related queries.
- Deputize for the PD and SE as needed.
Personal Specifications
Qualifications
- Relevant degree or equivalent academic qualifications.
- Member of a Professional Institution, working towards Chartered Engineer status.
Skills and Abilities
- Proven highway design skills, including competency in current highway and urban design practices.
- Proficiency in 3D level design.
- Strong analytical and numeracy skills.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues.
- Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation.
- Confident and clear communicator, adaptable to various stakeholders.
- High level of professional skills in Highway design, Traffic Management, and Civil Engineering schemes valued between £1m and £5m.
