Job description


Our client is seeking a Principal Traffic Engineer on a contract basis to support the delivery of Highways programme. This role is crucial for managing and overseeing highway and traffic engineering projects, ensuring they adhere to all current design guidance and legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on the technical delivery and approval of highway design and traffic engineering projects, including parking restrictions, movement orders, and traffic management schemes.
  • Support the Team Leader in managing the Engineering Design Team to deliver complex and innovative technical solutions.
  • Manage a portfolio of minor highway design projects and traffic engineering schemes related to S278/38 agreements.
  • Conduct and support feasibility studies, consultations, and surveys as required.
  • Communicate project updates with all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and elected members.
  • Oversee the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process from inception to completion.
  • Draft legal TRO schedules using map-based software and produce technical drawings.
  • Work collaboratively with other Council sections and developers to ensure cohesive traffic management across the city.
  • Manage project budgets and ensure financial and procurement accountability.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM and Health and Safety legislation.
  • Provide technical supervision and support to junior staff members.

Job Requirements:

  • Proven experience in traffic and highway engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of current design guidance and legislation relevant to the field.
  • Proficiency in managing Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) and drafting legal schedules.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, at general and technical levels.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers.
  • Experience in project management and budget control.
