Job description

Our client, a leading name in the power utilities and energy sector, is seeking a Lead Primary Design Engineer to join a team specialising in substation and cabling projects at both distribution and transmission levels, crucially supporting the UK's decarbonisation targets.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leading and mentoring a team of engineers, fostering growth and development
• Acting as the technical authority on primary plant design, including power transformers, AIS/GIS switchgear, cabling, and accessories
• Developing concept and detailed designs in line with DNO and National Grid standards
• Managing project budgets to ensure cost-effective design delivery
• Delivering detailed substation plant designs, including layouts, specifications, and short-circuit calculations
• Ensuring compliance with CDM 2015 regulations and acting as a Principal Designer when required
• Guiding on constructability issues to enhance project efficiency
• Conducting due diligence checks on internal and third-party technical outputs

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (or working towards it)
• Proven experience in substation primary plant design
• Strong leadership and team management skills
• Proficient working knowledge of CDM regulations
• Experience in power system studies and earthing design (beneficial)
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
