Job description
Are you an experienced Clerk of Works with a passion for delivering high-quality public infrastructure? We are looking for a proactive and detail-focused professional to oversee the delivery of highways and traffic schemes in a vibrant London borough.
About the Role
As Clerk of Works, you will be responsible for monitoring and inspecting a wide range of traffic and public realm projects delivered by the term maintenance contractor. These include cycling and walking schemes, school streets, local safety initiatives, parking improvements, bus priority measures, and sustainable drainage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and inspect works on-site to ensure compliance with design specifications, engineers' instructions, and health and safety legislation.
- Conduct daily site visits, surveys, and inspections; identify and record defects and ensure timely resolution.
- Monitor traffic management arrangements and ensure they meet legal and safety standards.
- Liaise with contractors, engineers, and internal teams to support project delivery and resolve technical issues.
- Measure completed works for payment purposes, ideally in collaboration with the contractor's representative.
- Provide expert advice on construction methods and contribute to continuous improvement of service delivery.
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and liaise with the Streetworks Team regarding permits and coordination.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Experience
- In-depth knowledge of the Highways Act 1980, NRSWA 1991, TMA 2004, CDM Regulations, and Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual.
- Experience in traffic design, highways construction, and civil engineering contracts.
- Proven ability to manage and inspect a variety of traffic and highways projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook) and AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of construction materials, practices, and health and safety compliance.
- Ability to monitor contractor performance and ensure quality standards are met.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
