The Job

Our client is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.

They are looking for a civil infrastructure engineer, with broad skills in civil engineering to join their successful infrastructure team in Sheffield. This team is currently growing and will be fifteen strong in the near future.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects for commercial and public sector clients, including overseas projects.

You are likely to have experience in general civil engineering design which may include:
Terrain modelling and earthworks design.
Flood risk assessment and drainage solutions.
Intelligent utility modelling solutions and coordination.
Street and highways design.

A knowledge of structural engineering design that may include retaining walls and underground infrastructure would be an advantage but not essential.

You will play an active role in all stages of our projects, across a number of sectors. Projects are wide ranging and currently include redevelopment of Sheffield Retail Quarter, a new Harbour in Aberdeen and the earthworks/ drainage design associated with HS2 Phase 2a.

You will join a close knit team of ten civil engineers based in Sheffield that work collaboratively as part of our wider team across North West and Yorkshire sub-region.

From Sheffield we work on a range of local, national and international projects and have recently completed the Diamond Building for University of Sheffield, Sheraton Park Public Realm Scheme in Doha and Copenhagen Arena. Currently we are working on projects including: Don Valley Olympic Legacy Park Redevelopment, York City Infrastructure Plan and Graves Leisure Centre.

As well as working with the civil engineering team you will be also working with a wide range of other specialists, particularly the Railways, Energy, Geotechnical, Environment, Buildings and Consulting teams who are based with us in our Sheffield office. You will also be working with people across the UK and overseas.

Carrying out civil engineering design.
Supervision of others carrying out civil and structure engineering design.
Analytical, creative and conceptual thinking and evaluation of options and make decisions.
Use of AutoCAD or Microstation CAD packages for design.
Developing interest in use of various design software packages (GSA, Oasys packages) spread sheets and GIS.
Checking the quality and accuracy of own and others' work.
Working with other Arup colleagues, and our collaborators and clients.
Writing official documents for internal and external use.
Responsible for defined parts of design projects and individual projects, including the commercial aspects of these elements / projects.
Working with Clients and Customers and colleagues to generate mutual agreeable outcomes.
Responsible for organising events, activities, processes, and/or small internal
business projects.
Developing interest in BIM and conducting design in a 3D environment.
Developing interests in the wider field of civil engineering projects such as an understanding of drainage design, utilities design, and highways design.
You will have the opportunity to take more responsibility and leadership of the projects on which you work, or to increase your technical specialist skills.
Mentoring the development of younger engineers within the team.
Represents the team both internally and externally.

To undertake this role you will have;
Regular contact with the senior engineers in the civil engineering team.
Regular contact with other engineers and technicians in the team.
Regular contact with project staff in other disciplines.
Contact with clients and external collaborators.

Essential Skills and Knowledge
Numerative, with good technical knowledge in Civil engineering analysis and design.
Experience of developing solutions with varying levels of detail from masterplanning phase through to construction information.
Be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising designers, engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance to less experienced members of the design team.
Manage own and others time, ensuring the production of project and design deliverables to agreed deadlines and within budget.
Proven ability to write accurate, clear, high quality reports in English.
Ability to respond to Project Manager and Client requests and meet challenging deadlines.

You will have an appropriate HND, university degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering.
Close to gaining professional membership (or already a Chartered member) the ICE or similar.

Desirable skills and knowledge:
Ideally competent in the use of CAD and GIS (e.g. Bentley MicroStation/AutoCAD) software for drawing and/or designing, and use of projectwise.
Experience in use in various design software packages would be an advantage.
Preparation of bids, tenders, and control spend in the bid/tendering process.
Commercial management skills in administering project controls change process and financial forecasting on a monthly basis.
Practical site experience, including CSCS would be beneficial.
Developing interest in BIM and conducting design in a 3D environment.
Existing mentoring of others.
