As a Marine Engineering Manager you will bring together the technological problem-solving capability of engineering and the organisational, administrative, and planning abilities of management in order to oversee complex enterprises from conception to completion. You could have the opportunity to work in teams that are responsible for delivering submarines from build into service, with each submarine costing approximately £1.5billion. Additionally you could work within a team involved with all aspects of the design of the Submarine Platform Systems including, but not limited to Hydraulics, Cooling Water Systems, Gas Systems, Fire Fighting and Escape and Rescue.

Some of the day to day duties may include:- Identify and manage marine engineering risk whilst providing guidance of marine engineering issues- Collect, collate and evaluate technical data, review technical equipment and systems and support, and take decisions on these- Provide independent perspective on innovation and technology risk in the delivery of military capability- Review and update the engineering management plans- Deliver on change, concessions and configuration management plan- Develop engineering functional assessments of the programme and deliver status reports- Assist in the management and resolution of any caveats and conditions of certification which are the project's responsibility or hazards (hazard areas) the post is responsible for- Review and action the design and build concessions- People management Some of these posts require specific knowledge of watertight integrity and secondary structure, where you will be undertaking Watertight Integrity Safety Certification and maintaining and developing Submarine Safety Policies. You could be involved in data analysis and hazard assessments for in-service and future submarines and support the wider team through providing expert advice.

All of these posts are at Bristol, Abbey Wood but there is a requirement for travel to other UK sites on an occasional basis. There is also the opportunity to take part in sea trials, which may include limited sea time.

To be successful in these roles you will have:

  • Experience in Engineering management activities such as; writing engineering process, planning, change and risk mitigation
  • Substantial experience including operating as a manager in a complex organisation and breadth of technical experience across more than one discipline and environment
  • Stakeholder management experience
  • Marine background- Safety Engineering experience
  • Leading and developing a team
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with tenacity to defend technical position under programme pressure
  • Qualification in an Engineering or Science related area or extensive experience in the relevant subject matter

It would be advantageous if you have experience in submarine experience - submarine safety and watertight integrity knowledge of both systems and procedures

The SDA is responsible for the UK's submarine maintenance and build programme, a top priority of the UK's defence programme and one of the largest UK programmes in existence.
