Our client is looking for an Operations Manager to manage and grow their engineering team based in Portland, Dorset. The company supply into many engineering sectors and work with businesses around the UK.

Responsibilities

Working directly with the General Manager you will establish and achieve key objectives for the Department and assets under your control, specifically:

  • Responsibility for the efficient operation of the Controls and Automation department to achieve maximum profitability and develop and achieve the budget.
  • Devise and implement strategy and tactics to maximise sales and profit opportunities within your area of responsibility.
  • To manage the operation in a way which strengthens and supports the business objectives, develops the Controls and Automation Department as a profit centre and which makes the maximum contributions to financial success and overall responsibility for profit and loss.
  • Be a key member of the senior management team, supporting the growth of the business and formulating strategies and plans, thus being integral to the success of the company.
  • Report key issues, profit and loss information and progress against the budget to the management team.
  • To effectively co-ordinate the activities of the Controls and Automation Department and develop them to a level where they can take on more responsibility and better contribute to the business.
  • To maximise sales opportunities by liaising with customers, carrying out site inspections and providing quotations with technical and commercial solutions where needed.
  • To maximise the efficiency of the sales to order fulfilment and invoicing process, ensuring operational key performance indicators are established and standards achieved.
  • To deliver a quality of service which meets or exceeds customers' expectations and be proactive in developing new business with existing and potential customers.
  • In conjunction with the Compliance Manager ensure that all Company policies and procedures for ISO9001, ISO14001 are implemented and that regulations on health and safety are adhered to in order to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Responsible for ensuring all work is completed to compliance and quality industry standards.
  • To be responsible for the site, its assets, real estate maintenance and safe systems of work.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication links with all other company departments and awareness of all company products.
  • A company vehicle will be provided. Some travelling will be undertaken which may require overnight stays.

Qualifications

  • Engineering qualified ideally to Degree/HND or equivalent or qualified by experience.
  • Management qualification or experience.
  • Manual handling qualification (desirable).

Knowledge & Skills

  • Sound knowledge of controls and automation.
  • Good knowledge of Health & Safety Issues in connection with the construction industry.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and that of staff and work in a systematic and organised manner to ensure work is completed within set timescales.
  • Project planning and coordination.
  • Ability to carry out site inspections and compile survey reports for quotation purposes.
  • IT literate - excellent computer skills, including operating Gannt charts
  • Ability to undertake risk assessments.
  • Excellent financial and commercial understanding/mind-set.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Experience

  • Some years' experience working on controls/control panel equipment preferable in a service environment or engineering related business
  • Some years' experience of managing a team for successful delivery of time critical projects.
  • Ideally water industry/environmental experience.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Able to communicate effectively to customers and company management and staff.
  • To work as part of a team and to manage/co-operate with other staff.
  • Conduct the work activities in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the company.
  • Drive and passion to succeed in business

Other Factors

  • Must hold current valid driving licence.
  • Able to work outside on sites which are connected with wastewater (sewage).
  • Able to carry out work tasks that involve physical strength, stamina, standing, kneeling or crouching.
  • Valid passport with the ability to work/travel abroad.
