Naval Architect / Structures Engineer

Exciting opportunities for Naval Architects have arisen to help the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) deliver safe, capable and available submarines for operation by the Royal Navy. You could have the chance to work on assignments across a range of submarine projects from concept to in-service.
The Royal Navy's Submarine Service has operated the UK's Nuclear Deterrent every hour of every day for nearly 50 years, protecting our nation from the most extreme threats. We are now recruiting extraordinary people to match this resolve by helping deliver the UK's next generation of ballistic missile submarines - the Dreadnought Class.
The Dreadnought Alliance is a partnership between the SDA, BAE Systems and Rolls Royce to deliver the nation's next generation nuclear deterrent submarine into service in the 2030s. As a Naval Architect in the SDA you will act as the Whole Boat Approving Authority, providing Subject Matter Expertise input and ensuring that the product is safe, capable, and delivered to time and cost. At all times you will work closely with the Royal Navy customer and the Shipbuilder. You can expect to be involved at all stages of a project from developing design requirements, reviewing the design through to ensuring that the completed vessel has met the design intent.
You can expect to work in a multi-disciplinary team with other engineering disciplines as well as project managers, commercial and cost engineers. You will use your expertise and experience to provide technical advice to a wide range of stakeholders and to help make decisions on everything from performance/cost trade-offs on new-build projects through to structural repair schemes. Positions in Barrow-In-Furness will see you embedded in the Shipyard but will also include visits to other build yards and industry partners with opportunities for sea trials. You may also be involved in working collaboratively with foreign navies and research organisations to develop and improve new technology.
We are looking for qualified engineers with an interest in Naval Architecture and keen to develop in this area.
In order to be successful you will have:
- An interest in working in one or more of these key areas:
- ship or submarine design
- hydrostatics o hydrodynamics
- ship or submarine structures
- maritime regulation
- The ability to read, interpret and communicate complex technical information (including CAD and Drawings)
- A track record of delivering results, working in teams and strong communication skills
It would be highly advantageous if you have:
- Practical experience in either naval or maritime sectors
- The ability to use naval architectural analysis toolsQualifications:
Currently roles are available in:
- Dreadnought Naval Architecture Team
- Dreadnought Structures Team
Candidates qualified to Level 6 (e.g. BEng) in a relevant subject (e.g. naval architecture/mechanical engineering/aerospace engineering/civil engineering/structural engineering) will be considered without experience, though candidates qualified to Level 4 (e.g. HNC) combined with relevant practical experience may also be considered.
N.B. For the right candidate there is the potential opportunity to undertake a Naval Architecture MSc or ship/submarine design course.
