Southern Water are looking for an experienced Repair & Maintenance Approval Engineer to join them on a permanent staff basis from their Offices in Worthing, West Sussex.

The Job

This is an SME role required to lead the Technical Planning team on the technical appraisal of sewer repair solutions, the recommendation of repairs, the approval and scheduling of work and the raising of work orders to ensure serviceability issues on the sewer network are addressed in a timely manner.

Scope of role

This is a lead role on the WWC Service desk who will be a SME providing technical support when raising work for SW R & M Service partners for work on the sewer network.

The Service Desk control all follow-on work raised for the R & M Service Partner and this Approval Lead role is an important role in ensuring that the work being raised is required, is the right repair solution, provides value for money and has the appropriate priority level attached. Where the solution does not meet the approvals criteria, this will be challenged with the R & M partners and alternative ideas and solutions explored.

This role will require a person with experience of working on underground pipework systems, preferable in the water utility industry, they will be required to have experience in the viewing of CCTV footage to understand faults in pipes and grade their severity for a repair strategy. They will be required to approve repair solutions for technical suitability and compliance with SW standards and specifications. Where proposed solutions do not meet required criteria, they will be required to work with the R & M partners and SW stakeholders to develop alternative solutions.

In addition, programmes of planned CCTV's are required to understand the condition of sections of the network or catchment areas for rehabilitation works. As above, these will need to be reviewed and reports generated on their condition including recommendations for any repairs or investment for rehabilitation works.

This role will also require liaising with Investigation Technicians, County Engineers, County Customer Managers, Service Desk and Delivery Engineers on particular aspects of the sewer network condition to ensure all relevant factors are considered, surveys carried out to ensure value for money solutions are adopted. The role will require difficult decisions to be made balancing customer needs which impacts C-Mex and budget constraints. There will be a need to have reasoned arguments and rationale's for decisions made.

Innovative ideas, new technologies, and continuous improvement initiatives will be considered, evaluated and introduced as part of this role.

There will be times when site visit will be required to investigate repair options and carry out investigations using "Look-see" CCTV rigs.

As part of a governance and performance, there will be requirement to audit the effectiveness of planned sewer cleansing and CCTV activities by the R & M Service Partner and generate audit reports with recommended actions.

This Lead role will also involve a level of budget control, up to £20k and supervision of work load within the Service desk function to ensure work is carried out efficiently and effectively.

The role will require interaction with the Financial Governance Manager to work collaboratively in delivering the WWC Sewer Network budget, make technical assessment and business cases for work that can be stopped, suspended, changed or temporarily held and monitored.

Conversely there will be a requirement to understand the business ODI's and develop strategies and initiatives to help deliver them.

2. Produce reports on CCTV reviews carried out recommending repair solutions & strategies. 15%

3. Liaise with 3rd parties, IT's, CCM's, CE's, DE's and Service Desk on repair solutions. 10%

4. Investigate new innovations, new technologies and continuous improvement initiatives to drive out efficiencies and cost savings. 10%

5. Carry out site surveys using Look-see CCTV rig. 5%

6. Audit of R &M Service partner CCTV & Sewer Cleansing programmes 10%

7. Budget, financial and strategy activities 10%
