6 skills that could boost your .NET developer salary

In 2017, the majority of developers (56.5%) believed they were underpaid, according to Stack Overflow's Developer Survey results. Data collected by IT Jobs Watch, however, has revealed that the median annual salary for a .NET Developer in the UK increased by 6% to £45,000, with the median contractor rate rising by 12% to £420 per day.

Here are six skills that could increase your pay as a .NET developer: 

Client-side web development technologies

If you’re able to create beautiful, interactive web applications and have a strong portfolio of work, you’re likely to earn a higher salary as a .NET developer. Technologies such as Angular and React are all currently in high demand with employers, so learning more about these could be lucrative.

Cloud experience

Due to the large number of enterprises moving over to cloud based systems many organisations are increasingly seeking .NET developers who have experience with cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS. More .NET developers are needed to create systems that interact with these cloud environments, so those who possess this experience are likely to be able to command a higher salary.

Agile methodologies

People using Agile methodologies as well as Test Driven Development (TDD) and Behavioural Driven Development (BDD) will also be able to attract a premium salary. Furthermore, .NET developers who have experience with Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) will also be attractive to employers and as a result be able to increase their salary growth potential.

Experience with Web API and REST API with C#

.NET developers with strong systems integration experience using Web API and REST API with C# will find that companies seeking these skills tend to pay more money.

Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD)

Obtaining qualifications such as The Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) certification could help you to increase your salary in .NET development. This is highly regarded by employers as it’s developed by Microsoft and requires recertification every two years, meaning that it’ll always be up-to-date. It’s not easy to earn an MCSD certification but there are a wide variety of training resources available, and the increase in pay makes this worthwhile on a longer-term basis. 

Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP)

Earning the prestigious Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) status will show that you’re at the top of your game, allowing you to negotiate a higher salary. In order to earn this status, developers will have been thoroughly vetted by Microsoft and have a proven track record of outstanding technical ability in Microsoft technologies. Whilst there aren’t any set requirements to earn this status, you need to be able to demonstrate your high level of dedication to the .NET community by helping and mentoring others.
