Opportunity knocks on the South Coast for Manufacturing Engineers in the Aerospace industry
Demand for Manufacturing Engineers is on the upturn in the Aerospace sector. Whilst commercial aviation has seen a slowdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aerospace sector as a whole has rebounded healthily, and is growing at an unprecedented rate. As a result, Recruitment Specialists are experiencing increased demand from their Aerospace partners to expand their talent force. And with each passing year, this expansion shows no signs of slowing.
Notably, across the South coast of England demand for Manufacturing Engineers is particularly concentrated. The UK Aerospace sector is the second largest in Europe, with more than a quarter of aerospace and defence businesses being clustered in the South. Over the course of the last seven years, the industry has seen extensive growth, with over 72% of that taking place across Hampshire and Surrey.
We spoke to Tim Carling, Head of Mobility for Matchtech, about the crucial skills Aerospace businesses are actively seeking. He notes that, whilst candidates’ academic performance is beneficial, with the increased rate of expansion, it is not enough to simply be competitive.
“Many of our partners are abundantly clear. They are looking for "problem solvers", engineers who have strong essential skills and who know how to apply them to solve engineering problems with great turnaround.”
In addition to this, Tim highlights the common misconception that engineering is an introverted profession, specifically in the Aviation industry.
“Aerospace is inherently collaborative - each person a vital cog in an impressive machine. Our clients look for team skills, such as project management experience, leadership skills, and ability to work in a team.”
The breadth of opportunity currently available to aerospace professionals in the South has never before been this expansive. Along the coast, companies are engaging in ground-breaking and world-leading advancements. Manufacturing Engineers are being encouraged to join the South Coast’s most innovative aviation hubs at a critical moment in aerospace history.
