Introduction

As an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer at WSP, you'll play a hands-on role in shaping the UK's journey to Net Zero. Joining a talented, multidisciplinary team, you'll help deliver the power transmission infrastructure that keeps the nation running and the future sustainable.

With more than 300km of OHL projects in the pipeline, it's a chance to work on major, high-impact projects while growing your expertise and making a real difference to the UK's energy landscape.

What will I be doing?

In this role, you'll design and shape overhead power line systems, carefully selecting the right structures, conductors, and insulators for each project. Some of your typical activities will include:

  • Bringing designs to life with detailed drawings, specifications, and documentation using tools like AutoCAD and PLS-CADD.
  • Getting hands-on with site surveys and assessments, gathering the data that drives smart, accurate design decisions.
  • Carrying out precise technical calculations and analysis to guarantee the strength, safety, and performance of every line.
  • Making sure that every design meets industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental best practices.
  • Reviewing and refining design changes while providing technical expertise throughout the construction phase.

What do I need to succeed?

You're an experienced engineer, with either a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field such as Electrical or Power Engineering. Alongside this, you'll have:

  • Hands-on experience in overhead line engineering, working with systems up to 400kV.
  • Experience in upgrading projects, including the use of High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductors.
  • Familiarity with advanced technical concepts like galloping studies, EMF and field effects, wake effects, and AC interference for gas pipelines is a definite plus!
  • Flexible and ready to travel as project demands require.
