About the Role

We are seeking a Safety Investigator to join our Aviation Safety team, playing a vital role in maintaining and improving the safety and integrity of our aviation operations.

You will be responsible for conducting thorough and professional investigations into aviation safety occurrences and incidents, identifying causal factors, and recommending effective mitigations to prevent recurrence.

This is a hands-on and highly collaborative role that requires strong analytical skills, sound technical understanding, and the ability to engage confidently with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

As a Safety Investigator, you will:

  • Conduct investigations into assigned aviation safety occurrences and incidents.

  • Conduct interviews with personnel involved or affected by safety events.

  • Record and manage investigations within relevant reporting systems (e.g. Centrik).

  • Identify causal and contributory factors, including Human Factors considerations.

  • Provide timely updates and briefings to the Aviation Safety Manager (UK) and Accountable Managers on investigation progress and findings.

  • Highlight emerging or potential aviation safety risks, particularly where Bowtie safety barriers are weak or missing.

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and operational teams to propose solutions to safety issues.

  • Support and contribute to Event Review Groups (ERG), ensuring outcomes and actions are tracked through to completion.

  • Conduct analysis and trending of safety data to identify repeat or systemic issues.

  • Contribute to the continual improvement of safety initiatives and processes, such as Safety Protects.

  • Respond to aviation safety-related queries and provide expert advice as required.

  • Support the progression and investigation of Defence Aviation Safety Occurrence Reports (DASORs).

  • Conduct or support offsite investigations, including within the UK and occasionally overseas.

About You

You will be passionate about aviation safety, detail-oriented, and driven by the desire to improve systems and culture through evidence-based learning.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Experience in aviation safety investigations or airworthiness engineering.

  • Strong understanding of aviation safety management systems (SMS).

  • Knowledge of Human Factors principles and their application in safety analysis.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all organisational levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, able to identify root causes and propose practical solutions.

  • Competent user of safety or occurrence reporting tools (e.g. Centrik or equivalent).

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience within defence or regulated aviation environments.

  • Familiarity with the Bowtie risk model and related assurance frameworks.

  • Prior involvement in Event Review Groups or similar safety governance structures.

  • Understanding of DASOR processes and MOD or CAA regulatory frameworks.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK and internationally for investigations.
