Our client, a local authority on the South Coast, is currently seeking a Highway Engineer to join their team on a contract basis. This role is crucial for supporting a range of infrastructure and public realm improvement projects, offering a hybrid working arrangement based in the south coast.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake design of highways and public realm schemes, including layouts, detailed design, and technical drawings.
  • Apply relevant Local Authority (LA) and Department for Transport (DfT) design standards independently.
  • Prepare design calculations, reports, and cost estimates.
  • Support and coordinate with site teams during project delivery, including site inspections and supervision as required.
  • Ensure all designs comply with current health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, contractors, and consultants to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience as a Design Engineer within a local authority or similar environment.
  • Strong knowledge of design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently on small to medium-sized schemes, applying engineering judgement and standards confidently.
  • Experience in site supervision and ensuring design compliance on-site.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or equivalent).
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with drainage design or SUDS.
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations.
  • Chartered or working towards professional membership (e.g., ICE).
