Our client, a prominent entity in the public sector, is seeking a Principal Structures Engineer on a contract basis to join their dynamic Highways team. This role involves leading and managing the delivery of bridge and highway structures projects, ensuring statutory compliance, structural safety, and long-term serviceability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, design, and management of bridge and highway structure maintenance and improvement works.
  • Perform technical approvals of designs, assessments, and inspections in accordance with UK standards and guidance (e.g., DMRB, CS 450, BD 63).
  • Supervise and develop a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with legislation and standards.
  • Manage inspections (General, Principal, Special) in line with UK standards and guidance.
  • Oversee external consultants and contractors to ensure efficient delivery of projects on time and within budget.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, contract documents, and procurement plans.
  • Act as Technical Approval Authority or Checking Engineer where qualified.
  • Ensure Health & Safety and CDM Regulations are comprehensively integrated into all activities.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience of working in a Highways Structures environment.
  • Proficiency in inspection, assessment, and management of highway structures.
  • Substantial post-qualification experience in bridge/structures design, maintenance, and asset management.
  • Strong collaboration skills with external consultants and contractors.
  • Detailed knowledge of current UK codes, standards, and regulations, including DMRB and CDM.
  • Problem-solving skills and evidence-based decision-making abilities.
  • Experience in managing and supervising people, along with setting financial budgets.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team within matrix working arrangements.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical information.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with ICE or an equivalent professional body (desirable).
  • Ability to demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills through extended experience and training.
