Position: Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer / Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Location: South Yorkshire (projects across the UK)
Contract: Full-time, permanent

This is a full-time, permanent role working as part of an experienced Sheffield-based team that supports seven UK offices and delivers projects nationwide. You will contribute to a wide range of geotechnical and land contamination projects across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, regeneration, and local government.


What to Expect

As a Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer, you will be involved in both the planning and delivery of project investigations, balancing office-based project management with site work. Your responsibilities will span geo-environmental and geotechnical investigations, data interpretation, report writing, geotechnical design, and site supervision for remediation and earthworks.
The role is ideal for someone proactive, detail-oriented, motivated, and comfortable working with a wide range of people.


Key Responsibilities

  • Completing Preliminary Risk Assessments (Phase 1 Desk Studies) and intrusive site investigations in accordance with national standards and industry guidance.

  • Planning and managing Phase 2 investigations, including health and safety considerations, CDM compliance, and procuring subcontractors.

  • Overseeing fieldwork activities, including supervising drilling and excavation operations, conducting gas and groundwater monitoring, sampling groundwater and surface water, logging soils and rocks, and carrying out in-situ testing.

  • Undertaking geotechnical design work, including slope stability assessments and settlement analysis.

  • Supervising remediation and earthworks projects, ensuring all works meet the approved specification, and liaising with contractors throughout.

  • Scheduling soil, rock and water samples for geotechnical and chemical laboratory testing.

  • Balancing time between site and office-based tasks, with occasional travel requiring overnight stays.

  • Producing factual and interpretative reports, earthworks specifications, remediation strategies, and validation reports.

  • Assisting senior staff in the preparation of fee proposals.


About You

  • Minimum BSc degree in Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline.

  • 7-10 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Solid understanding of CDM Regulations and experience in site management.

  • Experience supervising trial pitting, windowless sampling and other intrusive investigations, including managing subcontractors and ensuring on-site safety.

  • Rock core logging experience is beneficial but not essential.

  • Demonstrable experience supervising and validating remediation and earthworks projects, with a track record of ensuring compliance with specifications.

  • Experience in assessing, investigating, and treating shallow mine workings.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly technical report writing.

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks.

  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

  • Adaptable, flexible, and proactive.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with Openground software is an advantage.

  • Commitment to professional development and membership of (or working towards membership of) a relevant professional body.

  • Experience supporting and mentoring junior colleagues.

  • Full UK manual driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
