Our client, a prominent player in the Defence & Security sector, is seeking a Principal FPGA Engineer on a contract basis. This dynamic role involves leading FPGA developments from preliminary specifications to verified design running on target hardware. The Principal FPGA Design Engineer is tasked with providing expert knowledge in electronic design, testing, and certification of systems based around advanced FPGAs while coaching and guiding other Design Engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilising good engineering practice to produce Firmware for innovative and profitable products and solutions.
- Supporting and enhancing existing Firmware as per business and commercial needs.
- Defining requirements, designing, documenting, implementing, testing, and verifying solutions.
- Designing, implementing, and debugging VHDL based FPGA hardware.
- Developing test benches and vectors to verify VHDL based FPGA.
- Writing technical documentation including requirements specifications, test specifications, and functional descriptions.
- Taking responsibility for multiple projects, including scoping tasks, defining resources, estimating time scales, and monitoring project progress.
- Using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, and signal generators to test hardware and verify its operation.
- Mentoring junior team members and providing constructive feedback.
- Conducting design reviews of FPGA design and VHDL implementation.
- Providing in-house training on FPGA design, techniques, and tools.
- Occasional travel within the UK as required.
Job Requirements:
- Experience working on systems containing multiple FPGAs.
- Proven ability to analyse system requirements and decompose them into suitable implementations.
- Track record of producing designs on time and within budget.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Experience working on Radar or related DSP applications.
- 10 or more years' experience working on FPGA designs.
